2009 Baseball America High School All Americans in 2012


I'm going to take a look at how the members of the 2009 Baseball America high school baseball All American team did in 2012. It will be interesting how well early success translated to their later baseball careers

LHP David Holmberg of Charlotte High School in Charlotte, FL was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the second round in 2009. He was traded to the Diamondbacks in 2010. He split 2012 between Class A Advanced Visalia and Double A Mobile. He was 6-3 with a 2.99 ERA, 86 K, 0.97 WHIP in 78.1 IP over 12 games at Visalia and was 5-5 with a 3.60 ERA, 67 K, 1.34 WHIP in 95.0 IP over 15 games at Mobile.

RHP Keyvius Sampson of Ocala High School in Ocala, FL was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the fourth round in 2009. He pitched 2012 at Double A San Antonio. He was 8-11 with a 5.00 ERA, 122 K, 1.35 WHIP in 122.1 IP over 26 games.

LHP Patrick Schuster of Mitchell High School in Port Richey, FL was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 13th round in 2009. He pitched 2012 at Class A Advanced Visalia. He was 4-5 with a 4.90 ERA, 67 K, 1.37 WHIP, 1 SV in 64.1 IP over 47 games.

RHP Jacob Turner of Westminster Christian Academy in St Louis, MO was drafted by the Detroit Tigers with the ninth pick of the first round in 2009. He split 2012 between the Tigers and Marlins organizations after a July trade. Before the trade he pitched at Class A Advanced Lakeland, Triple A Toledo and the Tigers and was 1-2 with a 1.66 ERA, 17 K, 1.11 WHIP in 21.2 IP over 4 games at Lakeland, was 4-2 with a 3.16 ERA, 40 K, 1.21 WHIP in 62.2 IP over 10 games at Toledo and was 1-1 with a 8.03 ERA, 7 K, 1.95 WHIP in 12.1 IP over 3 games with the Tigers. After the trade he split time with Triple A New Orleans and the Marlins and was 2-0 with a 1.98 ERA, 16 K, 1.43 WHIP in 27.1 over 5 games at New Orleans and was 1-4 with a 3.38 ERA, 29 K, 0.98 WHIP in 42.2 IP over 7 games with the Marlins. 

RHP Zack Wheeler of East Paulding High School in Dallas, GA was drafted by the San Francisco Giants with the sixth pick of the first round in 2009. He split 2012 between Double A Binghamton and Triple A Buffalo. He was 10-6 with a 3.26 ERA, 117 K, 1.16 WHIP in 116.0 IP over 19 games at Binghamton and was 2-2 with a 3.27 ERA, 31 K, 1.18 WHIP in 33.0 IP over 6 games at Buffalo.

Catcher Bryce Harper of Las Vegas High School in Las Vegas, NV was a sophomore in 2009. He passed the GED and enrolled to play at the College of Southern Nevada. In 2010 he was drafted by the Washington Nationals with the first overall pick. He split 2012 between Triple A Syracuse and the Nationals. He hit .243/.325/.365 with 1 HR, 3 RBI, 8 R, 1 SB in 21 games at Syracuse and hit .270/.340/.477 with 22 HR, 59 RBI, 98 R, 18 SB in 139 games with the Nationals. He was the NL Rookie of the Year.

Infielder Matt Davidson of Yucaipa High School in Yucaipa, CA was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks with the 35th pick of the first round in 2009. He played 2012 at Double A Mobile. He hit .261/.367/.469 with 23 HR, 76 RBI, 81 R, 3 SB in 135 games.

Infielder Kenny Diekroeger of Menlo High School in Atherton, CA was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the second round in 2009 but opted to play at Stanford. He was drafted by the Royals in the fourth round in 2012. He played 2012 at Rookie Burlington and hit .208/.275/.366 with 8 HR, 33 RBI, 21 R, 5 SB in 52 games.

Infielder Nick Franklin of Lake Brantly High School in Altamonte Springs, FL was drafted by the Seattle Mariners with the 27th pick of the first round in 2009.  He split 2012 between Double A Jackson and Triple A Tacoma. He hit .322/.394/.502 with 4 HR, 26 RBI, 25 R, 9 SB in 57 games at Jackson and hit .243/.310/.416 with 7 HR, 29 RBI, 39 R, 3 SB in 64 games at Tacoma. 

Infielder Jeff Malm of Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, NV was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the fifth round in 2009. 
He played 2012 at Class A Bowling Green. He hit .263/.356/.438 with 13 HR, 61 RBI, 67 R, 6 SB in 128 games.

Outfielder Randal Grichuk of Lamar Consolidated High School in Rosenberg, TX was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels with the 24th pick of the first round in 2009. He played 2012 at Class A Advanced Inland Empire. He hit .298/.335/.488 with 18 HR, 71 RBI, 79 R, 16 SB in 135 games.

Outfielder Mike Trout of Millville Senior High School in Millville, NJ was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels with the 25th pick of the first round in 2009. He split 2012 between Triple A Salt Lake and the Angels. He hit .403/.467/.623 with 1 HR, 13 RBI, 21 R, 6 SB in 20 games at Salt Lake and hit .326/.399/.564 with 30 HR, 83 RBI, 129 R, 49 SB in 139 games. He was selected AL Rookie of the Year.

Outfielder Max Walla of Albuquerque Academy in Albuquerque, NM was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the second round in 2009. He played 2012 at Class A Wisconsin. He hit .234/.325/.341 with 7 HR, 41 RBI, 58 R, 12 SB in 101 games.

DH Austin Maddox of Eagle's View Academy in Jacksonville, FL was drafted by the Tampa Rays in the 37th round in 2009 but opted to play at Florida. He was drafted by the Red Sox in the third round in 2012 as a RHP. He split 2012 between Rookie Gulf Coast and Class A Lowell. He was 0-1 with a 1.80 ERA, 4 K, 1.00 WHIP in 5.0 IP over 3 games at Gulf Coast and was 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA, 4 K, 1.00 WHIP in 3.0 IP in 1 game at Lowell.

Utility/RHP Matt Hobgood of Norco High School in Norco, CA was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles with the fifth pick of the first round in 2009. He missed the 2012 season recovering from rotator-cuff surgery.
