2008 Baseball America High School All Americans in 2012


I'm going to take a look at how the members of the 2008 Baseball America high school baseball All American team did in 2012. It will be interesting how well early success translated to their later baseball careers. 

LHP Brett DeVall of Niceville High School in Niceville, FL was drafted by the Atlanta Braves with the 40th pick of the first round in 2008. He was released by the Braves in April 2011 after numerous elbow injuries.

LHP Danny Hultzen of St Albans School in Washington D.C. was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 10th round in 2008 and turned them down to play at Virginia. He split 2012 between Double A Jackson and Triple A Tacoma. He was 8-3 with a 1.19 ERA, 79 K, 0.93 WHIP in 75.1 IP over 13 games at Jackson and was 1-4 with a 5.92 ERA, 57 K, 1.89 WHIP in 48.2 IP over 12 games at Tacoma.

RHP Taylor Jungmann of Georgetown High School in Georgetown, TX was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in the in the 24th round in 2008 and turned them down to play at Texas. He was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers with the 12th pick of the first round in 2011. He pitched 2012 at Class A Advanced Brevard County. He was 11-6 with a 3.53 ERA, 99 K, 1.34 WHIP in 153.0 IP over 26 games.   

RHP Jake Odorizzi of High Land High School in Highland, IL was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers with the 32nd pick of the first round in 2008. He was traded to the Royals in 2010. He split 2012 between Double A Northwest Arkansas, Triple A Omaha and the Royals. He was 4-2 with a 3.32 ERA, 47 K, 0.97 WHIP in 38.0 IP over 7 games at Northwest Arkansas, was 11-3 with a 2.93 ERA, 88 K, 1.35 WHIP in 107.1 IP over 19 games at Omaha and was 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA, 4 K, 1.64 WHIP in 7.1 IP over 2 games with the Royals. He was traded to the Rays in December.


Catcher Kyle Skipworth of Patriot High School in Riverside, CA was drafted by the Florida Marlins with the sixth pick of the first round in 2008. He played 2012 at Double A Jacksonville. He hit .217/.285/.414 with 21 HR, 63 RBI, 59 R, 1 SB in 116 games.

Infielder Tim Beckham of Griffin High School in Griffin, GA was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays with the first overall pick in 2008. He played 2012 at Triple A Durham. He hit .256/.325/.361 with 6 HR, 28 RBI, 40 R, 6 SB in 72 games. He did miss 50 games due to a suspension for testing positive for drugs.

Infielder Eric Hosmer of American Heritage School in Plantation, FL was drafted by the Kansas City Royals with the third pick of the first round in 2008. He played 2012 with the Royals. He hit .232/.304/.359 with 14 HR, 60 RBI, 65 R, 16 SB in 152 games.

Infielder Anthony Hewitt of Salisbury School in Salisbury, CT was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies with the 24th pick of the first round in 2008. He played 2012 at Class A Advanced Clearwater. He hit .241/.281/.387 with 13 HR, 50 RBI, 41 R, 13 SB in 108 games. 

Infielder Derrik Gibson of Seaford High School in Seaford, DE was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the second round in 2008. He played 2012 at Double A Portland. He hit .225/.304/.272 with 0 HR, 26 RBI, 43 R, 14 SB in 115 games.

Outfielder Jay Austin of North Atlanta High School in Atlanta, GA was drafted by the Houston Astros in the second round in 2008. He played 2012 at Class A Lexington. He hit .255/.356/.314 with 0 HR, 4 RBI, 7 R, 5 SB in 15 games. He missed most of the season with a broken hand.

Outfielder Xavier Avery of Cedar Grove High School in Ellenwood, GA was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the second round in 2008. He split 2012 between Triple A Norfolk and the Orioles. He hit .236/.330/.356 with 8 HR, 34 RBI, 57 R, 22 SB in 102 games with Norfolk and hit .223/.305/.340 with 1 HR, 6 RBI, 14 R, 6 SB in 32 games with the Orioles.

Outfielder Jaff Decker of Mountain High School in Peoria, AZ was drafted by the San Diego Padres with the 42nd pick of the first round in 2008. He split 2012 between Rookie Arizona and Double A San Antonio. He hit .296/.394/.593 with 1 HR, 7 RBI, 5 R, 0 SB in 9 games at Arizona and hit .184/.365/.293 with 3 HR, 9 RBI, 30 R, 6 SB in 47 games at San Antonio. He continued his injury prone ways and spent much of the season on the DL.

Utility/RHP Ethan Martin of Stephens County High School in Toccoa, GA was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers with the 15th pick of the first round in 2008. He split the 2012 between the Dodgers and Phillies organizations after being traded in July. Before the traded he pitched with the Dodgers Double A team Chattanooga and was 8-6 with a 3.58 ERA, 112 K, 1.27 WHIP in 118.0 IP over 20 games. After the trade he pitched with the Phillies Double A team Reading and was 5-0 with a 3.18 ERA, 35 K, 1.18 ERA in 39.2 IP over 7 games.
