2008 USA Today High School Baseball All Americans in 2012


I'm going to take a look at how the members of the 2008 USA Today high school baseball All American team did in 2012. It will be interesting how well early success translated to their later baseball careers. 

RHP Gerrit Cole of Luthern High School in Orange, CA was drafted by the New York Yankees in 2008 but turned them down to play at UCLA. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the first overall pick in 2011. He split 2012 between Class A Advanced Bradenton, Double A Altoona and Triple A Indianapolis. He was 5-1 with a 2.55 ERA, 69 K, 1.10 WHIP in 67.0 IP over 13 games at Bradenton, was 3-6 with a 2.90 ERA, 60 K, 1.30 WHIP in 59.0 IP over 12 games at Altoona and was 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA, 7 K, 1.17 WHIP in 6.0 IP in 1 game with Indianapolis. 

RHP Tim Melville of Wentzville Holt High School in Wentzville, MO was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the fourth round in 2008. He split 2012 between Rookie Arizona, Class A Kane County and Double A Northwest Arkansas. He was 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA, 7 K, 0.60 WHIP in 5.0 IP over 2 games at Arizona, was 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA, 4 K, 1.67 WHIP in 6.0 IP over 2 games at Kane County and was 2-1 with a 7.71 ERA, 19 K, 1.80 WHIP in 23.1 IP over 6 games at Northwest Arkansas. He missed most of the season with a broken finger and the rehab.

RHP Jake Odorizzi of High Land High School in Highland, IL was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers with the 32nd pick of the first round in 2008. He was traded to the Royals in 2010. He split 2012 between Double A Northwest Arkansas, Triple A Omaha and the Royals. He was 4-2 with a 3.32 ERA, 47 K, 0.97 WHIP in 38.0 IP over 7 games at Northwest Arkansas, was 11-3 with a 2.93 ERA, 88 K, 1.35 WHIP in 107.1 IP over 19 games at Omaha and was 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA, 4 K, 1.64 WHIP in 7.1 IP over 2 games with the Royals. He was traded to the Rays in December.

Catcher Kyle Skipworth of Patriot High School in Riverside, CA was drafted by the Florida Marlins with the sixth pick of the first round in 2008. He played 2012 at Double A Jacksonville. He hit .217/.285/.414 with 21 HR, 63 RBI, 59 R, 1 SB in 116 games.

Infielder Tim Beckham of Griffin High School in Griffin, GA was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays with the first overall pick in 2008. He played 2012 at Triple A Durham. He hit .256/.325/.361 with 6 HR, 28 RBI, 40 R, 6 SB in 72 games. He did miss 50 games due to a suspension for testing positive for drugs.

Infielder Eric Hosmer of American Heritage School in Plantation, FL was drafted by the Kansas City Royals with the third pick of the first round in 2008. He played 2012 with the Royals. He hit .232/.304/.359 with 14 HR, 60 RBI, 65 R, 16 SB in 152 games.

Infielder Destin Hood of St Paul's Episcopal School in Mobile, AL was drafted by the Washington Nationals in the second round in 2008. He split 2012 between Class A Auburn and Double A Harrisburg. He hit .176/.300/.235 with 0 HR, 0 RBI, 3 R, 0 SB in 5 games at Auburn and hit .245/.301/.344 with 3 HR, 45 RBI, 45 R, 6 SB in 94 games at Harrisburg.

Infielder Casey Kelly of Sarasota High School in Sarasota, FL was drafted by the Boston Red Sox with the 30th pick of the first round in 2008. He was traded to the Padres in 2010.  He split 2012 between Rookie Arizona, Double A San Antonio, Triple A Tucson and the Padres. He was 0-1 with a 4.00 ERA, 7 K, 1.11 WHIP in 9.0 IP over 3 games at Arizona, was 0-1 with a 3.78 ERA, 18 K, 0.84 WHIP in 16.2 IP over 3 games with San Antonio, was was 0-0 with a 2.25 ERA, 14 K, 1.00 WHIP in 12.0 IP over 2 games at Tucson and was 2-3 with a 6.21 ERA, 26 K, 1.69 WHIP in 29.0 IP over 6 games with the Padres.

Outfielder Zach Collier of Chino Hills High School in Chino, CA was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies with the 34th pick of the first round in 2008. He played 2012 at Class A Advanced Clearwater. He hit .269/.333/.399 with 6 HR, 32 RBI, 39 R, 11 SB in 78 games.

Outfielder Aaron Hicks of Wilson High School in Long Beach, CA was drafted by the Minnesota Twins with the 14th pick of the first round in 2008. He played 2012 at Double A New Britain. He hit .286/.384/.460 with 13 HR, 61 RBI, 100 R, 32 SB in 129 games.
