2012 Where are they now 2007 MLB draft picks 31 to 40

The 2012 season is behind us and I'm checking how picks 31 to 40 of the 2007 draft did this season. Traditionally players drafted out of college advance faster than those drafted out of high school and pitchers usually advance faster than position players. Some players might also be traded to help their team get an established player that can help their team improve immediately.

The Washington Nationals drafted LHP Josh Smoker 31st out of Calhoun High School in Calhoun, GA. He split 2012 between Rookie Gulf Coast, Class A Hagerstown and Class A Advanced Potomac. He was 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA, 3 K, 0.80 WHIP in 5.0 IP over 2 games at Gulf Coast, was 0-1 with a 15.00 ERA, 1 K, 2.33 WHIP, 1 SV in 3.0 IP over 2 games at Hagerstown and was 0-0 with a 10.80 ERA, 2 K, 1.80 WHIP in 1.2 IP over 2 games at Potomac. He spent much of the season on the DL.

The San Francisco Giants drafted Shortstop Nick Noonan 32nd out of Francis Parker High School in San Diego, CA. He played 2012 at Triple A Fresno. He hit .296/.347/.416 with 9 HR, 62 RBI, 65 R, 7 SB in 129 games.

The Atlanta Braves drafted 2B/3B Jon Gilmore 33rd out of Iowa City High School in Iowa City, IA. He was traded to the White Sox in 2008. He played 2012 at Double A Birmingham. He hit .180/.252/.230 with 0 HR, 10 RBI, 16 R, 0 SB in 33 games. He spent much of the season on the DL and was released by the White Sox in October.

The Cincinnati Reds drafted SS/OF Todd Frazier 34th out of Rutgers. He split 2012 between Triple A Louisville and the Reds. He hit .231/.268/.359 with 1 HR, 7 RBI, 4 R, 3 SB in 10 games at Louisville and hit .273/.331/.498 with 19 HR, 67 RBI, 55 R, 3 SB in 128 games with the Reds.

The Texas Rangers drafted outfielder Julio Borbon 35th out of Tennessee. He played 2012 at Triple A Round Rock. He hit .304/.349/.433 with 10 HR, 56 RBI, 78 R, 20 SB in 126 games.

The St Louis Cardinals drafted RHP Clayton Mortensen 36th out of Gonzaga. He was traded to the Athletics in July 2009 , then traded to the Rockies in January 2011 and most recently traded to the Red Sox in January 2012. He split 2012 between Double A Portland and Triple A Pawtucket. He was 0-0 with a 18.00 ERA, 0 K, 4.00 WHIP in 1.0 IP in 1 game at Portland and was 5-3 with a 1.91 ERA, 36 K, 0.96 WHIP, 2 SV in 37.2 IP over 24 games at Pawtucket.

The Toronto Blue Jays drafted LHP Brett Cecil 38th out of Maryland. He split 2012 between Double A New Hamphire, Triple A Las Vegas and the Blue Jays. He was 3-2 with a 3.38 ERA, 34 K, 1.36 WHIP in 42.2 IP over 9 games at New Hampshire, was 1-2 with a 2.50 ERA, 33 K, 1.08 WHIP in 39.2 IP over 6 games at Las Vegas and was 2-4 with a 5.72 ERA, 51 K, 1.52 WHIP in 61.1 IP over 21 games with the Blue Jays.

The Los Angeles Dodgers drafted LHP James Adkins 39th out of Tennessee. He was released by the Dodgers in April 2011 and signed with the Reds the next month. He was released by the Reds and did not play in 2012.

The San Diego Padres drafted outfielder Kellen Kulbacki 40th out of James Madison. He was released by the Padres before the 2011 season but played for the Independent team Lake Erie in the Frontier League.
