2012 Where are they now 2008 MLB draft picks 21 to 30


The 2012 season is behind us and I'm checking how picks 21 to 30 of the 2008 draft did this season. Traditionally players drafted out of college advance faster than those drafted out of high school and pitchers usually advance faster than position players. Some players might also be traded to help their team get an established player that can help their team improve immediately.

The Detroit Tigers drafted RHP Ryan Perry 21st out of Arizona. He was traded to the Nationals in 2011. He split 2012 between Double A Harrisburg, Triple A Syracuse and the Nationals. He was 2-4 with a 2.84 ERA, 46 K, 1.11 WHIP in 73.0 IP over 13 games at Harrisburg, was 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA, 14 K, 1.92 WHIP, 2 SV in 12.0 IP over 11 games at Syracuse and was 1-0 with a 10.13 ERA, 3 K, 1.75 WHIP in 8.0 IP over 7 games with the Nationals.

The New York Mets drafted shortstop Reese Havens 22nd out of South Carolina. He played 2012 at Double A Binghamton. He hit .215/.340/.351 with 10 HR, 39 RBI, 41 R, 1 SB in 94 games.

The San Diego Padres drafted first baseman Allan Dykstra 23rd out of Wake Forest. He was traded to the Mets in 2011. He split 2012 between Class A Advanced St Lucie and Double A Binghamton. He hit .258/.400/.355 with 0 HR, 2 RBI, 3 R, 1 SB in 9 games at St Lucie and hit .262/.423/.419 with 7 HR, 25 RBI, 35 R, 1 SB in 62 games at Binghamton.

The Philadelphia Phillies drafted shortstop Anthony Hewitt 24th out of Salisbury School in Salisbury, CT. He played 2012 at Class A Advanced Clearwater. He hit .241/.281/.387 with 13 HR, 50 RBI, 41 R, 13 SB in 108 games. 

The Colorado Rockies drafted LHP Christian Friedrich 25th out of Eastern Kentucky University. He split 2012 between Triple A Colorado Springs and the Rockies. He was 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA, 27 K, 0.90 WHIP in 30.0 IP over 5 games at Colorado Springs and was 5-8 with a 6.17 ERA, 74 K, 1.56 WHIP in 84.2 IP over 16 games with the Rockies. 

The Arizona Diamondbacks drafted LHP Daniel Schlereth 26th out of Arizona. He was traded in 2009 to the Tigers. He split 2012 between Class A Advanced Lakeland, Triple A Toledo and the Tigers. He was 0-0 with a 1.12 ERA, 9 K, 1.62 WHIP in 8.0 IP over 8 games with Lakeland, was 0-0 with a 10.80 ERA, 2 K, 4.20 WHIP in 1.2 IP over 3 games at Toledo and was 0-0 with a 10.29 ERA, 6 K, 2.71 WHIP in 7.0 IP over 6 games with the Tigers.

The Minnesota Twins drafted RHP Carlos Gutierrez 27th out of Miami. He pitched 2012 at Triple A Rochester. He was 2-2 with a 5.06 ERA, 20 K, 1.00 WHIP in 16.0 IP over 10 games. He missed most of the season with a shoulder injury. The Cubs claimed him off waivers in October 2012.

The New York Yankees drafted RHP Gerrit Cole 28th out of Orange Lutheran High School in California. He went unsigned and pitched at UCLA. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the first overall pick in 2011. He split 2012 between Class A Advanced Bradenton, Double A Altoona and Triple A Indianapolis. He was 5-1 with a 2.55 ERA, 69 K, 1.10 WHIP in 67.0 IP over 13 games at Bradenton, was 3-6 with a 2.90 ERA, 60 K, 1.30 WHIP in 59.0 IP over 12 games at Altoona and was 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA, 7 K, 1.17 WHIP in 6.0 IP in 1 game with Indianapolis. 

The Cleveland Indians drafted shortstop Lonnie Chisenhall 29th out of Pitt Community College. He split 2012 between Triple A Columbus and the Indians. He hit .314/.341/.517 with 4 HR, 17 RBI, 16 R, 0 SB in 30 games at Columbus and hit .268/.311/.430 with 5 HR, 16 RBI, 16 R, 2 SB in 43 games.

The Boston Red Sox drafted RHP Casey Kelly 30th out of Sarasota High School in Florida. He was traded to the Padres in 2010. He split 2012 between Rookie Arizona, Double A San Antonio, Triple A Tucson and the Padres. He was 0-1 with a 4.00 ERA, 7 K, 1.11 WHIP in 9.0 IP over 3 games at Arizona, was 0-1 with a 3.78 ERA, 18 K, 0.84 WHIP in 16.2 IP over 3 games with San Antonio, was was 0-0 with a 2.25 ERA, 14 K, 1.00 WHIP in 12.0 IP over 2 games at Tucson and was 2-3 with a 6.21 ERA, 26 K, 1.69 WHIP in 29.0 IP over 6 games with the Padres.
