The 2012 season is behind us and I'm checking how picks 21 to 33 of the 2011 draft did this season. Traditionally players drafted out of college advance faster than those drafted out of high school and pitchers usually advance faster than position players. Some players might also be traded to help their team get an established player that can help their team improve immediately.
The Toronto Blue Jays drafted RHP Tyler Beede 21st out of Lawrence Academy in Groton, MA. He did not sign and enrolled at Vanderbilt.
The St Louis Cardinals drafted second baseman Kolten Wong 22nd out of Hawaii. He played 2012 at Double A Springfield. He hit .287/.348/.405 with 9 HR, 52 RBI, 79 R, 21 SB in 126 games.
The Washington Nationals drafted RHP Alex Meyer 23rd out of Kentucky. He split 2012 between Class A Hagertown and Double A Potomac. He was 7-4 with a 3.10 ERA, 107 K, 1.13 WHIP in 90.0 IP over 18 games at Hagerstown and was 3-2 with a 2.31 ERA, 32 K, 1.03 WHIP in 39.0 IP over 7 games at Potomac. He was traded to the Twins in November.
The Tampa Bay Rays drafted RHP Taylor Guerrieri 24th out Spring Valley High School in Columbia, SC. He pitched 2012 at Class A Hudson Valley. He was 1-2 with a 1.04 ERA, 45 K, 0.77 WHIP in 52.0 IP over 12 games.
The San Diego Padres drafted RHP Joseph Ross 25th out of Bishop O'Dowd High School in Oakland, CA. He split 2012 between Rookie Arizona, Class A Eugene and Class A Fort Wayne. He was 0-0 with a 13.50 ERA, 1 K, 6.00 WHIP in 0.2 IP in 1 game at Arizona, was 0-2 with a 2.02 ERA, 28 K, 0.94 WHIP in 26.2 IP over 8 games at Eugene and was 0-2 with 6.26 ERA, 27 K, 1.61 WHIP in 27.1 IP over 6 games at Fort Wayne.
The Boston Red Sox drafted catcher Blake Swihart 26th out of V Sue Cleveland High School in Rio Rancho, NM. He played 2012 at Class A Greenville. He hit .262/.307/.395 with 7 HR, 53 RBI, 44 R, 6 SB in 92 games.
The Cincinnati Reds drafted RHP Robert Stephenson 27th out of Alhambra High School in Martinez, CA. He split 2012 between Rookie Billings and Class A Dayton. He was 1-0 with a 2.05 ERA, 37 K, 0.98 WHIP in 30.2 IP over 7 games at Billings and was 2-4 with a 4.19 ERA, 35 K, 1.37 WHIP in 34.1 IP over 8 games at Dayton.
The Atlanta Braves drafted LHP Sean Gilmartin 28th out of Florida State. He split 2012 between Double A Mississippi and Triple A Gwinnett. He was 5-8 with a 3.54 ERA, 86 K, 1.15 WHIP in 119.1 IP over 20 games at Mississippi and was 1-2 with a 4.78 ERA, 25 K, 1.43 WHIP in 37.2 IP over 7 games at Gwinnett.
The San Francisco Giants drafted shortstop Joe Panik 29th out of St Johns. He played 2012 at Class A Advanced San Jose. He hit .297/.368/.402 with 7 HR, 76 RBI, 93 R, 10 SB in 130 games.
The Minnesota Twins drafted shortstop Levi Michael 30th out of North Carolina. He played 2012 at Class A Advanced Fort Meyers. He hit .246/.339/.311 with 2 HR, 38 RBI, 58 R, 6 SB in 117 games.
The Tampa Bay Rays drafted outfielder Mikie Mahtook 31st out of LSU. He split 2012 between Class A Advanced Charlotte and Double A Montgomery. He hit .290/.358/.419 with 5 HR, 37 RBI, 44 R, 19 SB in 92 games at Charlotte and hit .248/.308/.405 with 4 HR, 25 RBI, 17 R, 4 SB in 39 games.
The Tampa Bay Rays drafted shortstop Jake Hager 32nd out of Sierra Vista High School in Las Vegas, NV. He played 2012 at Class A Bowling Green. He hit .281/.345/.412 with 10 HR, 72 RBI, 63 R, 17 SB in 114 games.
The Texas Rangers drafted LHP Kevin Matthews 33rd out of Richmond Hill High School in Richmond Hill, GA. He pitched 2012 at Class A Hickory. He was 3-4 with a 4.38 ERA, 66 K, 1.74 WHIP, 1 SV in 74.0 IP over 19 games.
