2012 Where are they now 2010 MLB draft top 10


The 2012 season is behind us and I'm checking how the top 10 players of the 2010 draft did this season. Traditionally players drafted out of college advance faster than those drafted out of high school and pitchers usually advance faster than position players. Some players might also be traded to help their team get an established player that can help their team improve immediately.

The first player drafted in 2010 was outfielder Bryce Harper by the Washington Nationals out of the College of Southern Nevada. Harper split 2012 between Triple A Syracuse and the Nationals. He hit .243/.325/.365 with 1 HR, 3 RBI, 8 R, 1 SB in 21 games at Syracuse and hit .270/.340/.477 with 22 HR, 59 RBI, 98 R, 18 SB in 139 games with the Nationals. He was the NL Rookie of the Year.

The Pittsburgh Pirates drafted RHP Jameson Taillon second out of the The Woodlands high school in Texas. He split 2012 between Class A Advanced Bradenton and Double A Altoona. He was 6-8 with a 3.82 ERA, 98 K, 1.17 WHIP in 125.0 IP over 23 games at Bradenton and was 3-0 with a 1.59 ERA, 18 K, 0.71 WHIP in 17.0 IP over 3 games at Altoona.

The Baltimore Orioles drafted shortstop Manny Machado third out of Brito Miami Private School in Miami, FL. He split 2012 between Double A Bowie and the Orioles. He hit .266/.352/.438 with 11 HR, 59 RBI, 60 R, 13 SB in 109 games at Bowie and hit .262/.294/.445 with 7 HR, 26 RBI, 24 R, 2 SB in 51 games with the Orioles.

The Kansas City Royals drafted shortstop Christian Colon fourth out of Cal State-Fullerton. He split 2012 between the Arizona Rookie team, Double A Northwest Arkansas and Triple A Omaha. He hit .364/.481/.500 with 0 HR, 4 RBI, 6 R, 1 SB in 7 games at Arizona, .289/.364/.392 with 5 HR, 27 RBI, 33 R, 12 SB in 73 games at Northwest Arkansas and hit .412/.429/.647 with 1 HR, 5 RBI, 4 R, 0 SB in 5 games at Omaha.

The Cleveland Indians drafted LHP Drew Pomeranz fifth out of Ole Miss. He was traded to the Rockies in 2011. He split 2012 between Double A Tulsa, Triple A Colorado Springs and the Rockies. He was 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA, 4 K, 1.25 WHIP in 4.0 IP in 1 game at Tulsa, was 4-4 with a 2.51 ERA, 46 K, 1.54 WHIP in 46.2 IP over 9 games at Colorado Springs and was 2-9 with a 4.93 ERA, 83 K, 1.48 WHIP in 96.2 IP over 22 games with the Rockies.

The Arizona Diamondbacks drafted RHP Barret Loux sixth out of Texas A&M. He failed his physical and was not offered a contract and later signed with the Texas Rangers as a free agent. He pitched 2012 at Double A Frisco. He was 14-1 with a 3.47 ERA, 100 K, 1.27 WHIP in 127.0 IP over 25 games. He was traded to the Cubs after the season.

The New York Mets drafted RHP Matt Harvey seventh out of North Carolina. He split 2012 between Triple A Buffalo and the Mets. He was 7-5 with a 3.68 ERA, 112 K, 1.32 WHIP in 110.0 IP over 20 games at Buffalo and was 3-5 with a 2.73 ERA, 70 K, 1.15 WHIP in 59.1 IP over 10 games with the Mets.

The Houston Astros drafted outfielder Delino DeShields Jr eighth out of Woodward Academy in College Park, GA. He split 2012 between Class A Lexington and Class A Advanced Lancaster. He hit .298/.401/.439 with 10 HR, 52 RBI, 96 R, 83 SB in 111 games at Lexington and hit .237/.336/.381 with 2 HR, 9 RBI, 17 R, 18 SB in 24 games at Lancaster.

The San Diego Padres drafted RHP Karsten Whitson ninth out of Chipley High School in Florida. He went unsigned and enrolled to pitch for the Florida Gators.

The Oakland Athletics drafted outfielder Michael Choice tenth out of the University of Texas-Arlington. He played 2012 at Double A Midland. He hit .287/.356/.423 with 10 HR, 58 RBI, 59 R, 5 SB in 91 games.
