2012 Where are they now 2008 MLB draft top 10

The 2012 season is behind us and I'm checking how the top 10 players of the 2008 draft did this season. Traditionally players drafted out of college advance faster than those drafted out of high school and pitchers usually advance faster than position players. Some players might also be traded to help their team get an established player that can help their team improve immediately.

The first player drafted in 2008 was shortstop Tim Beckham by the Tampa Bay Rays out of Griffin High School in Griffin, GA. He played 2012 at Triple A Durham. He hit .256/.325/.361 with 6 HR, 28 RBI, 40 R, 6 SB in 72 games. He did miss 50 games due to a suspension for testing positive for drugs.

The Pittsburgh Pirates drafted third baseman Pedro Alvarez second out of Vanderbilt. He played 2012 with the Pirates. He hit .244/.317/.467 with 30 HR, 85 RBI, 64 R, 1 SB in 149 games.

The Kansas City Royals drafted first baseman Eric Hosmer third out of American Heritage School in Plantation, FL. He played 2012 with the Royals. He hit .232/.304/.359 with 14 HR, 60 RBI, 65 R, 16 SB in 152 games.

The Baltimore Orioles drafted LHP Brian Matusz fourth out of the University of San Diego. He split the 2012 season between Triple A Norfolk and the Orioles. He was 2-1 with a 4.21 ERA, 32 K, 1.23 WHIP, 1 SV in 47.0 IP over 10 games at Norfolk and was 6-10 with a 4.87 ERA, 81 K, 1.56 WHIP in 98.0 IP over 34 games with the Orioles.

The San Francisco Giants drafted catcher Buster Posey fifth out of Florida State. He played 2012 with the Giants. He hit .336/.408/.549 with 24 HR, 103 RBI, 78 R, 1 SB in 148 games.

The Florida Marlins drafted catcher Kyle Skipworth sixth out of Patriot High School in Rubidoux, CA. He played 2012 at Double A Jacksonville. He hit .217/.285/.414 with 21 HR, 63 RBI, 59 R, 1 SB in 116 games.

The Cincinnati Reds drafted first baseman Yonder Alonso seventh out of Miami. He was traded to the Padres after the 2011 season. He played 2012 with the Padres. He hit .273/.348/.393 with 9 HR, 62 RBI, 47 R, 3 SB in 155 games.

The Chicago White Sox drafted shortstop Gordon Beckham eighth out of Georgia. He played 2012 with the White Sox. He hit .234/.296/.371 with 16 HR, 60 RBI, 62 R, 5 SB in 151 games.
