The 2012 season is behind us and I'm checking how the top 10 players of the 2011 draft did this season. Traditionally players drafted out of college advance faster than those drafted out of high school and pitchers usually advance faster than position players. Some players might also be traded to help their team get an established player that can help their team improve immediately.
The first player drafted in 2011 was RHP Gerrit Cole by the Pittsburgh Pirates out of UCLA. He split 2012 between Class A Advanced Bradenton, Double A Altoona and Triple A Indianapolis. He was 5-1 with a 2.55 ERA, 69 K, 1.10 WHIP in 67.0 IP over 13 games at Bradenton, was 3-6 with a 2.90 ERA, 60 K, 1.30 WHIP in 59.0 IP over 12 games at Altoona and was 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA, 7 K, 1.17 WHIP in 6.0 IP in 1 game with Indianapolis.
The Seattle Mariners drafted LHP Danny Hultzen second out of Virginia. He split 2012 between Double A Jackson and Triple A Tacoma. He was 8-3 with a 1.19 ERA, 79 K, 0.93 WHIP in 75.1 IP over 13 games at Jackson and was 1-4 with a 5.92 ERA, 57 K, 1.89 WHIP in 48.2 IP over 12 games at Tacoma.
The Arizona Diamondbacks drafted RHP Trevor Bauer third out of UCLA. He split 2012 between Double A Mobile, Triple A Reno and the Diamondbacks. He was 7-1 with a 1.68 ERA, 60 K, 1.22 WHIP in 48.1 IP over 8 games at Mobile, was 5-1 with a 2.85 ERA, 97 K, 1.33 WHIP in 82.0 IP over 14 games at Reno and was 1-2 with a 6.06 ERA, 17 K, 1.65 WHIP in 16.1 IP over 4 games with the Diamondbacks.
The Baltimore Orioles drafted RHP Dylan Bundy fifth out of Owasso High School in Owasso, OK. He split 2012 between Class A Delmarva, Class A Advanced Frederick, Double A Bowie and the Orioles. He was 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA, 40 K, 0.23 WHIP in 30.0 IP over 8 games at Delmarva, was 6-3 with a 2.84 ERA, 66 K, 1.16 WHIP in 57.0 IP over 12 games at Frederick, was 2-0 with a 3.24 ERA, 13 K, 1.32 WHIP in 16.2 IP over 3 games at Bowie and was 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA, 0 K, 1.20 WHIP in 1.2 IP over 2 games with the Orioles.
The Kansas City Royals drafted outfielder Bubba Starling fifth out of Gardner Edgerton High School in Gardner, KS. He played 2012 at Rookie Burlington. He hit .275/.371/.485 with 10 HR, 33 RBI, 35 R, 10 SB in 53 games.
The Washington Nationals drafted third baseman Anthony Rendon sixth out of Rice. He split 2012 between Rookie Gulf Coast, Class A Auburn, Class A Advanced Potomac and Double A Harrisburg. He hit .364/.500/1.000 with 2 HR, 6 RBI, 2 R, 0 SB in 5 games at Gulf Coast, hit .259/.375/.444 with 1 HR, 3 RBI, 7 R, 0 SB in 8 games at Auburn, hit .333/.438/.630 with 0 HR, 0 RBI, 5 R, 0 SB in 9 games at Potomac and hit .162/.305/.368 with 3 HR, 3 RBI, 14 R, 0 SB in 21 games at Harrisburg.
The Arizona Diamondbacks drafted RHP Archie Bradley seventh out of Broken Arrow High School in Broken Arrow, OK. He played 2012 at Class A South Bend. He was 12-6 with a 3.84 ERA, 152 K, 1.26 WHIP in 136.0 IP over 27 games.
The Cleveland Indians drafted shortstop Francisco Lindor eighth out of Montverde Academy in Montverde, FL. He played 2012 at Class A Lake County. He hit .257/.352/.355 with 6 HR, 42 RBI, 83 R, 27 SB in 122 games.
The Chicago Cubs drafted shortstop Javier Baez ninth out of Arlington Country Day School in Jacksonville, FL. He split 2012 between Class A Peoria and Class A Advanced Daytona. He hit .333/.383/.596 with 12 HR, 33 RBI, 41 R, 20 SB in 57 games at Peoria and hit .188/.244/.400 with 4 HR, 13 RBI, 9 R, 4 SB in 23 games at Daytona.
The San Diego Padres drafted second baseman Cory Spangenberg tenth out of Indian River Community College. He played 2012 at Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore. He hit .271/.324/.352 with 1 HR, 40 RBI, 53 R, 27 SB in 98 games.
