2012 Where are they now 2009 MLB draft picks 41 to 49

The 2012 season is behind us and I'm checking how picks 41 to 49 (which closed out the first round) of the 2009 draft did this season. Traditionally players drafted out of college advance faster than those drafted out of high school and pitchers usually advance faster than position players. Some players might also be traded to help their team get an established player that can help their team improve immediately.

The Arizona Diamondbacks drafted shortstop Christopher Owings 41st out of Gilbert High School in Gilbert, SC. He split 2012 between Class A Advanced Visalia and Double A Mobile. He hit .324/.362/.544 with 11 HR, 24 RBI, 51 RBI, 8 SB in 59 games at Visalia and hit .263/.291/.377 with 6 HR, 28 RBI, 35 R, 4 SB in 69 games at Mobile. 

The Los Angeles Angels drafted RHP Garrett Richards 42nd out of Oklahoma. He split 2012 between Triple A Salt Lake and the Angels. He was 7-3 with a 4.21 ERA, 65 K, 1.58 WHIP in 77.0 IP over 14 games at Salt Lake and was 4-3 with a 4.69 ERA, 47 K, 1.56 WHIP in 71.0 IP over 30 games with the Angels. 

The Cincinnati Reds drafted RHP Bradley Boxberger 43rd out of Southern Cal. He was traded to the Padres in December 2011. He split 2012 between Triple A Tucson and the Padres. He was 2-2 with a 2.70 ERA, 62 K, 1.29 WHIP, 5 SV in 43.1 IP over 37 games at Tucson and was 0-0 with a 2.60 ERA, 33 K, 1.45 WHIP in 27.2 IP over 24 games with the Padres.

The Texas Rangers drafted RHP Tanner Scheppers 44th out of the St Paul Saints of the Independent League. He had been drafted by the Pirates in the second round in 2008 out of Fresno State but did not sign. He split 2012 between Triple A Round Rock and the Rangers. He was 1-2 with a 3.48 ERA, 31 K, 1.10 WHIP, 11 SV in 31.0 IP over 27 games at Round Rock and was 1-1 with a 4.45 ERA, 30 K, 1.73 WHIP, 1 SV in 39 games with the Rangers.

The Arizona Diamondbacks drafted LHP Michael Belfiore 45th out of Boston College. He split 2012 the Diamondbacks and Orioles organizations after he was traded. Before the trade he was at the Diamondbacks Class A Advanced Visalia and he was 0-0 with a 2.37 ERA, 28 K, 0.95 WHIP, 1 SV in 19.0 IP over 12 games. After the traded he was at the Orioles Double A Bowie and was 5-1 with a 2.85 ERA, 50 K, 1.35 WHIP, 2 SV in 47.1 IP over 28 games.

The Minnesota Twins drafted LHP Matthew Bashore 46th out of Indiana. He was released by the Twins after the 2011 season and signed with the Yankees. He split 2012 between Class A Charleston and Class A Advanced Tampa. He was 1-4 with a 3.78 ERA, 42 K, 1.28 WHIP in 50.0 IP over 11 games at Charleston and was 0-0 with a 3.60 ERA, 7 K, 2.00 WHIP in 10.0 IP over 5 games at Tampa.

The Milwaukee Brewers drafted RHP Kyle Heckathorn 47th out of Kennesaw State.  He pitched 2012 at Double A Huntsville. He was 5-11 with a 4.75 ERA, 88 K, 1.38 WHIP in 119.1 IP over 35 games.

The Los Angeles Angels drafted LHP Tyler Kehrer 48th out of Eastern Illinois. He pitched 2012 at Class A Advanced Inland Empire. He was 2-3 with a 5.82 ERA, 37 K, 2.02 WHIP in 38.2 IP over 33 games.

The Pittsburgh Pirates drafted RHP Victor Black 49th out of Dallas Baptist. He pitched 2012 at Double A Altoona. He was 2-3 with a 1.65 ERA, 85 K, 1.15 WHIP, 13 SV in 60.0 IP over 51 games.
