2012 Where are they now 2009 MLB draft picks 21 to 32


The 2012 season is behind us and I'm checking how picks 21 to 32 of the 2009 draft did this season. Traditionally players drafted out of college advance faster than those drafted out of high school and pitchers usually advance faster than position players. Some players might also be traded to help their team get an established player that can help their team improve immediately.

The Houston Astros drafted shortstop Jiovanni Mier 21st out of Bonita High School in La Verne, CA. He split 2012 between Rookie Arizona and Class A Advanced Lancaster. He hit .214/.250/.286 with 0 HR, 2 RBI, 1 R, 0 SB in 5 games at Arizona and hit .292/.396/.409 with 3 HR, 25 RBI, 28 R, 6 SB in 46 games at Lancaster.

The Minnesota Twins drafted RHP Kyle Gibson 22nd out of Missouri. He split 2012 between Rookie Gulf Coast, Class A Advanced Fort Myers and Triple A Rochester. He was 0-0 with a 2.45 ERA, 16 K, 0.89 WHIP in 14.2 IP over 9 games at Gulf Coast, was 0-0 with a 2.57 ERA, 7 K, 1.00 WHIP in 7.0 IP over 2 games at 2 games at Fort Myers and was 0-2 with a 9.45 ERA, 10 K, 1.80 WHIP in 6.2 IP over 2 games at Rochester. He was limited after returning from Tommy John surgery.

The Chicago White Sox drafted outfielder Jared Mitchell 23rd out of LSU. He split 2012 between Double A Birmingham and Triple A Charlotte. He hit .240/.368/.440 with 10 HR, 54 RBI, 51 R, 20 SB in 94 games at Birmingham and hit .231/.329/.364 with 1 HR, 13 RBI, 18 R, 1 SB in 36 games at Charlotte.

The Los Angeles Angels drafted outfielder Randal Grichuk 24th out of Lamar Consolidated High School in Rosenberg, TX. It was a compensation pick. He played 2012 at Class A Advanced Inland Empire. He hit .298/.335/.488 with 18 HR, 71 RBI, 79 R, 16 SB in 135 games.

The Los Angeles Angels also drafted outfielder Mike Trout 25th out of Millville Senior High School in New Jersey. It was another compensation pick. He split 2012 between Triple A Salt Lake and the Angels. He hit .403/.467/.623 with 1 HR, 13 RBI, 21 R, 6 SB in 20 games at Salt Lake and hit .326/.399/.564 with 30 HR, 83 RBI, 129 R, 49 SB in 139 games. He was selected AL Rookie of the Year.

The Milwaukee Brewers drafted RHP Eric Arnett 26th out of Indiana. He pitched 2012 at Class A Advanced Brevard County. He was 1-0 with a 3.56 ERA, 61 K, 1.40 WHIP, 1 SV in 60.2 IP over 33 games.

The Seattle Mariners drafted shortstop Nick Franklin 27th out of Lake Brantley High School in Altamonte Springs, FL. He split 2012 between Double A Jackson and Triple A Tacoma. He hit .322/.394/.502 with 4 HR, 26 RBI, 25 R, 9 SB in 57 games at Jackson and hit .243/.310/.416 with 7 HR, 29 RBI, 39 R, 3 SB in 64 games at Tacoma.

The Boston Red Sox drafted outfielder Reymond Fuentes 28th out of Fernando Callejo High School in Manati, Puerto Rico. He played 2012 at Double A San Antonio. He hit .218/.301/.302 with 4 HR, 34 RBI, 53 R, 35 SB in 136 games.

The New York Yankees drafted outfielder Slade Heathcott 29th out of Texas High School in Texarkana, TX. He split 2012 between Rookie Gulf Coast and Class A Advanced Tampa. He hit .235/.409/.353 with 0 HR, 2 RBI, 3 R, 2 SB in 5 games at Gulf Coast and hit .307/.378/.461 with 5 HR, 27 RBI, 38 R, 17 SB in 60 games at Tampa.

The Tampa Bay Rays drafted second baseman LeVon Washington 30th out of Buchholz High School in Gainesville, FL. He did not sign and was drafted by the Indians in the second round in 2010 out of Chipola College. He split 2012 between Rookie Arizona, Class A Lake County and Class A Advanced Carolina. He hit .444/.500/.444 with 0 HR, 2 RBI, 3 R, 1 SB in 3 games at Arizona, hit .440/.563/.480 with 0 HR, 1 RBI, 8 R, 0 SB in 6 games at Lake County and hit .071/.133/.071 with 0 HR, 1 RBI, 2 R, 0 SB in 4 games at Carolina.  He missed most of the season after a hip injury that required surgery.

The Chicago Cubs drafted outfielder Brett Jackson 31st out of California. He split 2012 between Triple A Iowa and the Cubs. He hit .256/.338/.479 with 15 HR, 47 RBI, 66 R, 27 SB in 106 games at Iowa and hit .175/.303/.342 with 4 HR, 9 RBI, 14 R, 0 SB in 44 games with the Cubs.

The Colorado Rockies drafted outfielder Tim Wheeler 32nd out of Sacramento State University. He played 2012 at Triple A Colorado Springs. He hit .303/.357/.412 with 2 HR, 37 RBI, 67 R, 7 SB in 92 games.
