The 2012 season is behind us and I'm checking how picks 51 to 64 (which closed out the first round) of the 2007 draft did this season. Traditionally players drafted out of college advance faster than those drafted out of high school and pitchers usually advance faster than position players. Some players might also be traded to help their team get an established player that can help their team improve immediately.
The San Francisco Giants drafted shortstop Charles Culberson 51st out of Calhoun High School in Calhoun, GA. He played 2012 with the Giants and Rockies organizations after he was traded in July. Before the trade he split time between Triple A Fresno and the Giants and hit .236/.283/.396 with 10 HR, 53 RBI, 53 R, 8 SB in 91 games at Fresno and hit .136/.136/.136 with 0 HR, 1 RBI, 0 R, 0 SB in 6 games with the Giants. After the trade he played at Triple A Colorado Springs and hit .336/.344/.488 with 2 HR, 12 RBI, 17 R, 6 SB in 30 games.
The Seattle Mariners drafted third baseman Matt Mangini 52nd out of Oklahoma State. He was released by the Mariners in August 2011. He signed with the Rays in December 2011 and played in 2012 for Triple A Durham where he hit .273/.337/.373 with 5 HR, 32 RBI, 28 R, 2 SB in 82 games. He was released by the Rays in August. A week later he signed with the Diamondbacks and played for Double A Mobile where he hit .293/.412/.415 with 0 HR, 11 RBI, 5 R, 0 SB in 17 games.
The Cincinnati Reds drafted RHP Kyle Lotzkar 53rd out of Delta South in Tsawwassen, BC. He split 2012 between Class A Advanced Bakersfield and Double A Pensacola. He was 3-0 with a 2.39 ERA, 27 K, 1.21 WHIP in 26.1 IP over 5 games at Bakersfield and was 4-6 with a 5.21 ERA, 96 K, 1.51 WHIP in 86.1 IP over 18 games at Pensacola.
The Texas Rangers drafted RHP Raymond Thomas Hunter 54th out of Alabama-Tuscaloosa. He was traded to the Orioles in 2011. He split 2012 between Double A Bowie, Triple A Norfolk and the Orioles. He was 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA, 6 K, 0.40 WHIP, 1 SV in 10.0 IP over 2 games at Bowie, was 2-1 with a 4.66 ERA, 14 K, 1.29 WHIP in 19.1 IP over 3 games at Norfolk and was 7-8 with a 5.45 ERA, 77 K, 1.41 WHIP in 133.2 IP over 33 games with the Orioles.
The Boston Red Sox drafted LHP Nicholas Hagadone 55th out of Washington. He was traded to the Indians in 2009. He split 2012 between Triple A Columbus and the Indians. He was 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA, 7 K, 0.68 WHIP in 7.1 IP over 5 games at Columbus and was 1-0 with a 6.39 ERA, 26 K, 1.62 WHIP, 1 SV in 25.1 IP over 27 games with the Indians.
The Toronto Blue Jays drafted RHP Trystan Magnuson 56th out of Louisville. He was traded to the Athletics in 2010. He was traded back to the Blue Jays in November 2011. He split 2012 between Class A Advanced Dunedin and Double A New Hampshire. He was 0-4 with a 5.40 ERA, 26 K, 1.53 WHIP in 18.1 IP over 13 games at Dunedin and was 0-1 with a 1.95 ERA, 24 K, 1.02 WHIP, 5 SV in 32.1 IP over 25 games at New Hampshire.
The San Diego Padres drafted catcher Mitch Canham 57th out of Oregon State. He was released by the Padres after the 2010 season. Signed and played with the Athletics in 2011. He was released by the Athletics and signed with the Cardinals. In 2012 he played 18 games with Triple A Memphis hitting .125/.192/.125 with 0 HR, 0 RBI, 4 R, 0 SB before being released. He then played for the Independent team Long Island hitting .253/.310/.371 with 3 HR, 21 RBI, 28 R, 6 SB in 64 games.
The Los Angeles Angels drafted RHP Jonathon Bachanov 58th out of University High School in Orlando, FL. He was released by the Angels in May 2011 and then signed with the White Sox. He split 2012 between Class A Advanced Winston-Salem and Double A Birmingham. He was 7-2 with a 3.95 ERA, 55 K, 1.44 WHIP in 66.0 IP over 23 games at Winston-Salem and was 0-1 with a 11.42 ERA, 9 K, 3.11 WHIP in 8.2 IP over 9 games at Birmingham.
The Oakland Athletics drafted outfielder Corey Brown 59th out of Oklahoma State. He was traded to the Nationals in 2010. He split 2012 between Triple A Syracuse and the Nationals. He hit .285/.365/.523 with 25 HR, 71 RBI, 83 R, 18 SB in 126 games at Syracuse and hit .200/.231/.400 with 1 HR, 3 RBI, 4 R, 0 SB in 19 games with the Nationals.
The Detroit Tigers drafted RHP Joey Hamilton 60th out of Stanope Elmore High School in Alabama. He retired from baseball before the 2011 season.
The Arizona Diamondbacks drafted catcher Edward Easley 61st out of Mississippi State. He played 2012 at Double A Mobile. He hit .265/.356/.328 with 2 HR, 23 RBI, 18 R, 1 SB in 67 games.
The Boston Red Sox drafted 2B/SS Ryan Dent 62nd out of Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, CA. He split 2012 between Double A Portland and Triple A Pawtucket. He hit .237/.313/.293 with 3 HR, 22 RBI, 40 R, 4 SB in 83 games at Portland and hit .214/.313/.286 with 0 HR, 1 RBI, 2 R, 0 SB in 5 games at Pawtucket.
The San Diego Padres drafted LHP Cory Luebke 63rd out of Ohio State. He pitched 2012 with the Padres. He was 3-1 with a 2.61 ERA, 23 K, 1.16 WHIP in 31.0 IP over 5 games. He suffered an elbow injury and had Tommy John surgery in May.
The San Diego Padres drafted outfielder Daniel Payne 64th out of Georgia Tech. He was released by the Padres in March 2012.
