2009 Baseball America College All Americans in 2012
I'm going to take a look at how the members of the 2009 Baseball America college baseball All American team did in 2012. It will be interesting how well early success translated to their later baseball careers.
RHP Kyle Bellamy of Miami was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the fifth round in 2009. He split 2012 between Class A Advanced Winston-Salem and Double A Birmingham. He was 0-0 with a 1.65 ERA, 29 K, 0.95 WHIP, 4 SV in 27.1 IP over 18 games at Winston-Salem and was 1-2 with a 4.68 ERA, 14 K, 1.72 WHIP in 25.0 IP over 16 games.
RHP Louis Coleman of Louisiana State was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the fifth round in 2009. He split 2012 between Triple A Omaha and the Royals. He was 0-2 with a 3.20 ERA, 26 K, 1.07 WHIP, 3 SV in 19.2 IP over 11 games at Omaha and was 0-0 with a 3.71 ERA, 65 K, 1.31 WHIP in 51.0 IP over 42 games with the Royals.
RHP Mike Leake of Arizona State was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds with the eighth pick of the first round in 2009. He pitched 2012 with the Reds. He was 8-9 with a 4.58 ERA, 116 K, 1.35 WHIP in 179.0 IP over 30 games.
RHP A.J. Morris of Kansas State was drafted by the Washington Nationals in the fourth round in 2009. He was traded to the Chicago Cubs in January 2011. He played 2012 at Class A Advanced Daytona. He was 5-2 with a 2.24 ERA, 42 K, 0.97 WHIP, 7 SV in 52.1 IP over 39 games.
LHP Stephen Strasburg of San Diego State was drafted by the Washington Nationals with the first over all selection in 2009. He pitched 2012 for the Nationals. He was 15-6 with a 3.16 ERA, 197 K, 1.15 WHIP in 159.1 IP over 28 games.
Catcher Tony Sanchez was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the fourth pick of the first round in 2009. He split 2012 between Double A Altoona and Triple A Indianapolis. He hit .277/.370/.390 with 0 HR, 17 RBI, 22 R, 1 SB in 40 games at Altoona and hit .233/.316/.408 with 8 HR, 26 RBI, 21 R, 0 SB in 62 games at Indianapolis.
First baseman Dustin Ackley of North Carolina was drafted by the Seattle Mariners with the second pick of the first round in 2009. He played 2012 with the Mariners. He hit .226/.294/.328 with 12 HR, 50 RBI, 84 R, 13 SB in 153 games.
Second baseman Derek McCallum of Minnesota was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the fourth round in 2009. He was released by the Twins after the 2011 season.
Third baseman Chris Dominguez of Louisville was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the third round in 2009. He split 2012 between Double A Richmond and Triple A Fresco. He hit .223/.254/.303 with 2 HR, 19 RBI, 17 R, 2 SB in 49 games at Richmond and hit .247/.264/.362 with 3 HR, 25 RBI, 15 R, 1 SB in 43 games at Fresco.
Shortstop Stephen Cardullo of Florida State went undrafted in 2009 and was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 24th round in 2010. He was released by the Diamondbacks before the 2012 and played in the Independent Frontier League. He hit .263/.351/.375 with 3 HR, 35 RBI, 46 R, 15 SB in 87 games.
Outfielder Jason Kipnis of Arizona State was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the second round in 2009. He played 2012 with the Indians. He hit .257/.335/.379 with 14 HR, 76 RBI, 86 R, 31 SB in 152 games.
Outfielder Marc Krauss of Ohio was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the second round in 2009. He played 2012 with the Diamondbacks and the Astros organizations after he was traded in July. Before the trade he played at Double A Mobile and hit .283/.416/.509 with 15 HR, 61 RBI, 75 R, 6 SB in 104 games. After the traded he played at Double A Corpus Christi and Triple A Oklahoma City and hit .414/.514/1.000 with 5 HR, 16 RBI, 11 R, 1 SB in 7 games at Corpus Christi and hit .123/.203/.123 with 0 HR, 2 RBI, 3 R, 1 SB in 22 games at Oklahoma City.
Outfielder Kent Matthes of Alabama was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the fourth round in 2009. He played 2012 at Double A Tulsa. He hit .214/.273/.432 with 17 HR, 40 RBI, 44 R, 6 SB in 94 games.
DH Rich Poythress was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the second round in 2009. He split 2012 between Rookie Arizona and Double A Jackson. He hit .385/.600/1.154 with 3 HR, 7 RBI, 7 R, 0 SB in 5 games at Arizona and hit .304/.404/.439 with 6 HR, 45 RBI, 39 R, 4 SB in 86 games.
Utility/RHP Bryce Brentz was a sophomore in 2009. He was drafted by the Boston Red Sox with the 36th pick of the first round in 2010.
He split 2012 between Double A Portland and Triple A Pawtucket. He hit .296/.355/.478 with 17 HR, 76 RBI, 62 R, 7 SB in 122 games at Portland and hit .118/.167/.118 with 0 HR, 0 RBI, 0 R, 0 SB in 5 games at Pawtucket.
