Trevor Cahill was traded by the San Diego Padres to the Kansas City Royals on July 24, 2017 along with Brandon Maurer and Ryan Buchter. The Padres in exchange received Matt Strahm, Travis Wood, Esteury Ruiz and cash.
RHP Cahill had split 2017 between Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore and Triple A El Paso while rehabbing and with the Padres. He was 0-1, 6.75 ERA, 3 K, 1.50 WHIP, .231 BAA in 2.2 IP in 1 GS at Lake Elsinore, 0-1, 6.00 ERA, 4 K, 1.67 WHIP, 333 BAA in 3.0 IP in 1 GS at El Paso and 4-3, 3.69 ERA, 72 K, 1.34 WHIP, .247 BAA in 61.0 IP over 11 GS with the Padres. Over nine MLB seasons with the Padres, Cubs, Braves, Diamondbacks and Athletics he was 73-79, 4.03 ERA, 892 K, 1.36 WHIP, .254 BAA, 1 SV in 1210.1 IP over 273 games with 185 GS. He was originally drafted by the Athletics in the second round in 2006. Cahill turned 29 on March 1st.
RHP Maurer was 1-4, 5.72 ERA, 38 K, 1.19 WHIP, .257 BAA, 20 SV in 39.1 IP over 42 games with the Padres in 2017. Over five MLB seasons with the Padres and Mariners he was 14-25, 4.96 ERA, 274 K, 1.32 WHIP, .264 BAA, 33 SV in 319.2 IP over 226 games with 21 GS. He was originally drafted by the Mariners in the 23rd round in 2008 and traded to the Padres in 2014. Maurer turned 27 on July 3rd.
LHP Buchter was 3-3, 3.05 ERA, 47 K, 1.20 WHIP, .199 BAA, 1 SV in 38.1 IP over 42 games with the Padres in 2017. Over three MLB seasons with the Padres and Braves he was 7-3, 2.90 ERA, 126 K, 1.09 WHIP, .175 BAA, 2 SV in 102.1 IP over 110 games. He was originally drafted by the Nationals in the 33rd round in 2005. Buchter turned 30 on February 13.
LHP Strahm had split 2017 between Triple A Omaha and the Royals. He was 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 7 K, 0.40 WHIP, .118 BAA in 5.0 IP in 4 games at Omaha and 2-5, 5.45 ERA, 37 K, 1.50 WHIP, .236 BAA in 34.2 IP over 24 games in 3 GS with the Royals. Over two MLB seasons with the Royals he was 4-7, 3.81 ERA, 67 K, 1.34 WHIP, .213 BAA in 56.2 IP over 45 games with 3 GS. He was originally drafted by the Royals in the 21st round in 2012. Strahm turned 25 on November 12.
LHP Wood was 1-3, 6.91 ERA, 29 K, 1.82 WHIP, .329 BAA in 41.2 IP over 28 games with 3 GS with the Royals in 2017. Over eight MLB seasons with the Royals, Cubs and Reds he was 44-55, 4.13 ERA, 765 K, 1.30 WHIP, .247 BAA, 4 SV in 941.2 IP over 287 games with 136 GS. He was originally drafted by the Reds in the second round in 2005. Wood turned 30 on February 6th.
Second baseman Ruiz hit 36 for 86, .419/.440/.779 with 3 HR, 23 RBI, 22 R, 9 SB in 21 games at Rookie Arizona in 2017. He originally signed with the Royals in 2015 as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Ruiz turned 18 on February 15.
