Here is my week seven installment of College Spotlight for 2014. This week I am looking at Zack Collins of Miami and Jimmy Herget of South Florida.
Collins is a freshman C\DH out of American Heritage High School in Pembroke Pines, FL. On Sunday showed he is developing into one of the nation's power hitters by hitting two home runs while going 3 for 6 with 6 RBI. He now leads his team in home runs as he is hitting .224/.330/.494 with 6 HR, 19 RBI, 12 R, 0 SB in 27 games. Last year as a high school senior he hit .394/.548/.772 with 5 HR, 33 RBI, 34 R, 1 SB in 28 games as he was named to the 2013 Rawlings First Team All-America team. The Cincinnati Reds also drafted him in the 27th round in the 2013 MLB draft.
Herget is a sophomore RHP out of Jefferson High School in Tampa, FL. On Friday he battled to lead the Bulls to a 2-1 victory over Cincinnati. His line was 8.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 11 K in 120 pitches. This season he is 4-3, 0.96 ERA, 32 K, 1.18 WHIP in 46.2 IP over 7 games. Last season as a freshman he was 6-2, 1.72 ERA, 60 K, 0.95 WHIP in 94.0 IP over 15 games. The Atlanta Braves drafted him in the 40th round in the 2012 MLB draft.
