Mike Montgomery and Brad Boxberger of the Durham Bulls combined for a no-hitter in a 5-0 victory over the Scranton/Wilkes Barre RailRiders on April 26, 2014. Durham is the Triple A team of the Tampa Bay Rays. LHP Montgomery carried the brunt of the workload with his only blemish a walk to Russ Canzler in the second. His line for the game was 8.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 9 K in 106 pitches. RHP Boxberger came in relief in the ninth and had the line 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K in 8 pitches.
They had all the support needed in the first when Cole Figueroa singled and Vince Belnome and Wilson Betemit scored. Belnome added a solo home run in the third and also scored again in the fifth on a Jerry Sands double. Sands then added another score in the fifth when he scored on a Figueroa double.
This season Montgomery is 3-0, 2.81 ERA, 28 K, 1.13 WHIP in 25.2 IP over 5 games with Durham. He was originally drafted by the Royals with the 36th pick of the first round in 2008. He was traded to the Rays in 2012. Montgomery will be 25 on July 1st.
Boxberger has split this season between Durham and the Rays as he is 1-0, 1.93 ERA, 18 K, 0.86 WHIP, 2 SV in 9.1 IP over 6 games with Durham and 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 4 K, 0.75 WHIP in 4.0 IP over 3 games with the Rays. He has three seasons MLB experience with the Rays and Padres and for his MLB career is 0-1, 2.52 ERA, 61 K, 1.40 WHIP, 1 SV in 53.2 IP over 45 games. He was originally drafted by the Reds with the 43rd pick of the first round in 2009. He was traded to the Padres in 2011 and traded to the Rays in January 2014. Boxberger will be 26 on May 27.
