Thomas H Connolly was inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame class of 1953 along with Edward Barrow, Chief Bender, Dizzy Dean, William Klem, Al Simmons, Bobby Wallace and Harry Wright. Connolly and Klem were the first umpires to enter the Hall of Fame. He got his start in the minors umpiring in the New England League 1894-1897. He was brought up to the National League in 1898 but resigned during the 1900 season. The American League gave him another chance and he umpired the first ever American League game on April 24, 1901 between the Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Blues. Connolly umpired from 1901-1931 in the American League before leaving the field to become the first supervisor of umpires (1931-1954).
