Robert M (Lefty) Grove was inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame class of 1947 along with Mickey Cochrane, Frank Frisch and Carl Hubbell. Grove was a LHP with 17 seasons MLB experience pitching with the Philadelphia Athletics (1925-1933) and Boston Red Sox (1934-1941). For his MLB career he was 300-141 with a 3.06 ERA, 2266 K, 1.28 WHIP, 55 SV, 298 complete games, 35 shut outs in 3940.2 IP over 616 games.
I believe his best three seasons were 1931 when he was 31-4 with a 2.06 ERA, 175 K, 1.08 WHIP, 5 SV, 27 complete games, 4 shut outs in 288.2 IP over 41 games, 1930 when he was 28-5 with a 2.54 ERA, 209 K, 1.14 WHIP, 9 SV, 22 complete games, 2 shut outs in 291.0 IP over 50 games and 1928 when he was 24-8 with a 2.58 ERA, 183 K, 1.12 WHIP, 4 SV, 24 complete games, 4 shut outs in 261.2 IP over 39 games.
Grove led the American League in wins in 1928, 1930, 1931 and 1933 (24). He led the AL in ERA in 1926 (2.51), 1929 (2.81), 1930, 1931, 1932 (2.84), 1935 (2.70), 1936 (2.81), 1938 (3.08) and 1939 (2.54). He led the AL in strikeouts in 1925 (116), 1926 (194), 1927 (174), 1928, 1929 (170), 1930 and 1931. He led the AL in shut outs in 1931, 1932 (4) and 1936 (6).
He won the American League MVP in 1931. He was an All Star six times (1933, 1935-1939). Grove won two World Series Championships with the Athletics in 1929 and 1930.
