Charles A (Dazzy) Vance was inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame class of 1955 along with Home Run Baker, Joe DiMaggio, Gabby Harnett, Theodore Lyons and Raymond Schalk. Vance was a RHP with 16 seasons MLB experience pitching with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1915), New York Yankees (1915, 1918), Brooklyn Robins (1922-1931), Brooklyn Dodgers (1932), St Louis Cardinals (1933-1934) and Cincinnati Reds (1934). For his MLB career he was 197-140 with a 3.24 ERA, 2045 K, 1.23 WHIP, 11 SV, 216 complete games, 29 shut outs in 2966.2 IP over 442 games.
I believe his three best seasons were 1924 when he was 28-6 with a 2.16 ERA, 262 K, 1.02 WHIP, 30 complete games, 3 shut outs in 308.1 IP over 35 games, 1925 when he was 22-9 with a 3.53 ERA, 221 K, 1.18 WHIP, 26 complete games, 4 shut outs in 264.1 IP over 31 games and 1928 when he was 22-10 with a 2.09 ERA, 200 K, 1.06 WHIP, 2 SV, 24 complete games, 4 shut outs in 38 games.
Vance led the National League in wins in 1924 and 1925. He led the NL in ERA in 1924, 1928 and 1930 (2.61). He led the NL in strikeouts in 1922 (134), 1923 (197), 1924, 1925, 1926 (140), 1927 (184) and 1928. He led the the NL in shut outs in 1922 (5), 1925, 1928 and 1930 (4).
He pitched a no hitter on September 13, 1925 against the Philadelphia Phillies. Vance was the National League MVP in 1924. He won the World Series Championship with the Cardinals in 1934.
