Denton T (Cy) Young was inducted into the second MLB Hall of Fame class in 1937 along with Morgan Bulkeley, Ban Johnson, Nap Lajoie, Connie Mack, John McGraw, Tris Speaker and George Wright. RHP Young had 22 seasons MLB experience pitching for the Cleveland Spiders (1890-1898), St Louis Perfectos (1899-1900), Boston Americans (1900-1907), Boston Red Sox (1908), and Cleveland Naps (1909-1911). For his MLB career he was 511-316 with a 2.63 ERA, 2803 K, 1.13 WHIP, 749 complete games, 76 shut outs in 7356.0 IP over 906 games.
I believe his best three seasons were 1892 when he was 36-12 with a 1.93 ERA, 168 K, 1.06 WHIP, 48 complete games, 9 shut outs in 453.0 IP over 53 games, 1901 when he was 33-10 with a 1.62 ERA, 158 K, 0.97 WHIP, 38 complete games, 5 shut outs in 371.1 IP over 43 games and 1895 when he was 35-10 with a 3.26 ERA, 121 K, 1.18 WHIP, 36 complete games, 4 shut outs in 369.2 IP over 47 games.
Young led the National League in wins in 1892 and 1895. He led the American League in wins in 1901, 1902 (32) and 1903 (28). He led the NL in ERA in 1892. He led the AL in ERA in 1901. He led the NL in strikeouts in 1896 (140). He led the AL in strikeouts in 1901. He led the NL in shut outs in 1892, 1895, 1896 (5) and 1900 (4). He led the AL in shut outs in 1901, 1903 (7) and 1904 (10). He led the NL in saves in 1896 (3). He led the AL in saves in 1903 (2).
Young pitched 3 no-hitters with one on September 18, 1897 against the Cincinnati Reds, one on May 5, 1904 against the Philadelphia Athletics which was also a perfect game and one on June 30, 1908 against the New York Highlanders. He won one World Series with the Boston Americans in 1903. Young still holds the career MLB records for wins, losses, starts (815), innings pitched, seasons of 20 wins or more (15) and assists by a pitcher (2014).
