Christy Mathewson MLB Hall of Fame 1936

Christopher (Christy) Mathewson was inducted into the first MLB Hall of Fame class in 1936 along with Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Babe Ruth and Honus Wagner. RHP Mathewson had 16 season MLB experience pitching with the New York Giants (1900-1916) and Cincinnati Reds (1916). For his MLB career he was 373-188 with a 2.13 ERA, 2507 K, 1.06 WHIP, 30 SV, 435 complete games, 79 shut outs in 4788.2 IP over 636 games.

I believe his three best seasons were 1908 when he was 37-11 with a 1.43 ERA, 259 K, 0.83 WHIP, 5 SV, 34 complete games, 11 shut outs in 390.2 IP over 56 games, 1905 when he was 31-9 with a 1.28 ERA, 206 K, 0.93 WHIP, 3 SV, 32 complete games, 8 shut outs in 338.2 IP over 43 games and 1904 when he was 33-12 with a 2.03 ERA, 212 K, 1.04 WHIP, 1 SV, 33 complete games, 4 shut outs in 367.2 IP over 48 games.

Matthewson led the National League in wins in 1905, 1907 (24), 1908 and 1910 (27). He led the NL in ERA in 1905, 1908, 1909 (1.14), 1911 (1.99) and 1913 (2.06). He led the NL in strikeouts in 1903 (267), 1904, 1905, 1907 (178) and 1908. He led the NL in shut outs in 1902 (8), 1905, 1907 (8) and 1908.

He pitched two no-hitters with one on July 15, 1901 against the St Louis Cardinals and the other on June 13, 1905 against the Chicago Cubs. He finished second in NL MVP voting in 1911. His career wins and shut outs are both third all time. Matthewson won the World Series Championship with the Giants in 1905. He was traded to the Cincinnati Reds in July 1916 and also served as their manager 1916-1918.
