Charles A (Chief) Bender was inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame class of 1953 along with Edward Barrow, Thomas Connolly, Dizzy Dean, William Klem, Al Simmons, Bobby Wallace and Harry Wright. Bender was a RHP with 16 seasons MLB experience pitching with the Philadelphia Athletics (1903-1914), Baltimore Terrapins (1915), Philadelphia Phillies (1916-1917) and Chicago White Sox (1925). For his MLB career he was 212-127 with a 2.46 ERA, 1711 K, 1.11 WHIP, 34 SV, 255 complete games, 40 shut outs in 3017.0 IP over 459 games.
I believe his three best seasons were 1910 when he was 23-5 with a 1.58 ERA, 155 K, 0.92 WHIP, 25 complete games, 3 shut outs in 250.0 IP over 30 games, 1909 when he was 18-8 with a 1.66 ERA, 161 K, 0.96 WHIP, 1 SV, 24 complete games, 5 shut outs in 250.0 IP over 34 games and 1913 when he was 21-10 with a 2.21 ERA, 135 K, 1.13 WHIP, 13 SV in 236.2 IP over 48 games.
Bender led the American League in saves in 1906 (3) and 1913.
He threw a no hitter on May 12, 1910 against the Cleveland Naps. He won the World Series Championship with the Athletics in 1910, 1911 and 1913.
