William A (Candy) Cummings was inducted into the fourth MLB Hall of Fame class in 1939 along with Cap Anson, Edward Collins, Charles Comiskey, Buck Ewing, Lou Gehrig, Wee Willie Keeler, Old Hoss Radbourn, George Sisler and Albert Spalding. Cummings was a RHP\OF with six seasons MLB experience playing with the New York Mutuals (1872), Baltimore Canaries (1873), Philadelphia Whites (1874), Hartford Dark Blues (1875-1876) and Cincinnati Reds (1877). For his MLB career he was 145-94 with a 2.42 ERA, 259 K, 1.23 WHIP, 233 complete games, 19 shut outs in 2149.2 IP over 242 games. As a hitter for his MLB career he hit .213/.224/.257 with 0 HR, 107 RBI, 149 R, 3 SB in 247 games. Cummings was credited with being the first pitcher to throw a curve ball although there is some dispute.
However it was his career as a baseball executive that warranted his inclusion into the Hall of Fame. Cummings left the Reds in 1877 to become the first president of the International Association which was the first baseball minor league.
