Alexander Cartwright was inducted into the third MLB Hall of Fame class of 1938 along with Pete Alexander and Henry Chadwick. Cartwright is given credit as the inventor of the modern game of baseball and has the nickname "father of baseball".
Along with a committee of members of his Knickerbocker Baseball Club they came up with a set of rules for the game which was a derivation of the English sport rounders. Among the big differences from rounders were the introduction of foul territories and placing flat bases at the same distance from each other. Cartwright had been a volunteer fireman and based the name of his club on the Knickerbocker Fire Engine Company in New York City. He established his club in 1842.
