Andrew Cashner was traded by the San Diego Padres to the Miami Marlins on July 29, 2016 along with Colin Rea, Tayron Guerrero and cash. The Padres in exchange received Jarred Cosart, Carter Cappa, Luis Castillo and Josh Naylor.
RHP Cashner had split 2016 between Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore while rehabbing and the Padres. He was 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 K, 0.67 WHIP, .182 BAA in 3.0 IP in 1 game at Lake Elsinore and 4-7, 4.76 ERA, 67 K, 1.39 WHIP, .264 BAA in 79.1 IP over 16 games with the Padres. Over seven MLB seasons with the Padres and Cubs he was 30-49, 3.73 ERA, 563 K, 1.29 WHIP, .251 BAA in 673.2 IP over 190 games with 98 GS. Cashner was originally drafted by the Cubs ith the 19th pick of the first round in 2008 and was traded to the Padres in 2012. Cashner will be 30 on September 11.
RHP Rea split 2016 between Triple A El Paso and the Padres. He was 0-0, 9.00 ERA, 2 K, 2.00 WHIP, .250 BAA in 1.0 IP in 1 game at El Paso and 5-5, 4.98 ERA, 76 K, 1.46 WHIP, .262 BAA in 99.1 IP over 19 games with the Padres. Over two MLB seasons with the Padres he was 7-7, 4.81 ERA, 102 K, 1.41 WHIP, .258 BAA in 131.0 IP over 25 games. He was originally drafted by the Padres in the 12th round in 2011. Rea turned 26 on July 1st.
RHP Guerrero had split 2016 between Double A San Antonio and El Paso. He was 0-3, 4.94 ERA, 25 K, 1.27 WHIP, .235 BAA in 23.2 IP over 19 games at San Antonio and 0-0, 6.00 ERA, 11 K, 1.75 WHIP, .250 BAA in 12.0 IP over 13 games at El Paso. He originally signed with the Padres in 2009 as an amateur free agent out of Columbia. Guerrero turned 25 on January 9th,
RHP Cosart had split 2016 between Rookie Gulf Coast and Class A Advanced Jupiter while rehabbing, Triple A New Orleans and the Marlins. He was 0-1, 6.00 ERA, 1 K, 1.67 WHIP, .357 BAA in 3.0 IP in 1 game at Gulf Coast, 0-0, 3.60 ERA, 3 K, 1.20 WHIP, .250 BAA in 5.0 IP in 1 game at Jupiter, 3-4, 4.09 ERA, 30 K, 1.20 WHIP, .279 BAA in 50.2 IP over 10 games at New Orleans and 0-1, 5.95 ERA, 11 K, 1.78 WHIP, .257 BAA in 19.2 IP over 4 games with the Marlins. Over four MLB seasons with the Marlins and Astros he was 16-18, 3.69 ERA, 206 K, 1.39 WHIP, .247 BAA in 329.2 IP over 58 games. He was originally drafted by the Phillies in the 38th round in 2008, was traded to the Astros in 2011 and traded to the Marlins in 2014. Cosart turned 26 on May 25,
RHP Capps has not pitched in 2016 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He split 2015 between New Orleans and the Marlins. He was 0-2, 1.16 ERA, 15 K, 1.33 WHIP, .196 BAA, 3 SV in 15.0 IP over 13 games at New Orleans and 1-0, 1.16 ERA, 58 K, 0.81 WHIP, .168 BA in 31.0 IP over 30 games with the Marlins. Over four MLB seasons with the Marlins and Mariners he was 4-3, 3.99 ERA, 177 K, 1.34 WHIP, .258 BAA in 135.1 IP over 118 games. He was originally drafted by the Mariners in the third round in 2011 and was traded to the Marlins in 2013. Capps will be 26 on August 7th.
RHP Castillo was 7-3, 2.25 ERA, 84 K, 0.97 WHIP, .223 BAA in 100.0 IP over 20 games with 18 GS at Jupiter in 2016. He originally signed with the Giants in 2011 as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic and was traded to the Marlins in 2014. Castillo turned 23 on December 12.
Naylor is a first baseman who hit .269/.317/.430 with 9 HR, 54 RBI, 42 R, 10 SB in 89 games at Class A Greensboro in 2016. He was originally drafted by the Marlins with the12th pick of the first round in 2015. Naylor turned 19 on June 22.
