Melvin Upton Jr traded to Blue Jays

Melvin Upton Jr was traded by the San Diego Padres to the Toronto Blue Jays on July 26, 2016. The Padres in exchange received Hansel Rodriguez.

Upton is an outfielder who hit .256/.304/.439 with 16 HR, 45 RBI, 46 R, 20 SB in 92 games with the Padres in 2016. Over 12 MLB seasons with the Padres, Braves and Rays\Devil Rays he hit .245/.323/.404 with 160 HR, 570 RBI, 705 R, 293 SB in 1412 games. He was originally drafted by the Devil Rays with the second pick of the first round in 2002. Upton will be 32 on August 21.

RHP Rodriguez was 2-1, 3.06 ERA, 26 K, 1.11 WHIP, .203 BAA in 32.1 IP over 6 games at Rookie Bluefield in 2016. He originally signed with the Blue Jays in 2014 as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Rodriguez turned 19 on February 27.
