A. J. Burnett traded to Pirates

A. J. Burnett was traded by the New York Yankees to the Pittsburgh Pirates on February 17, 2012. In exchange the Yankees receive minor league players Diego Moreno and Exicardo Cayones.


RHP Burnett is 35 and has pitched 13 seasons in the Majors including three with the Yankees, three with the Blue Jays and seven with the Marlins. In 2011 he was 11-11 with a 5.15 ERA, 173 strikeouts and 1.43 WHIP in 190.1 innings over 32 games. For his career he is 121-111 with a 4.10 ERA, 1791 strikeouts and 1.33 WHIP in 1960.1 innings over 314 games. He was originally drafted by the Mets in the eighth round in 1995. 


RHP Moreno is 25 and split 2011 between Class A Advanced and Double A. He was 2-4 with a 3.21 ERA, 31 strikeouts, 1.22 WHIP and 5 saves in 33.2 innings over 34 games at Class A Advanced and was 0-0 with a 4.91 ERA, 14 strikeouts and 1.18 WHIP in 11 innings over seven games at Double A. He originally signed with the Pirates as an amateur free agent in 2009 out of Venezuela.


Cayones is 20 and an outfielder who split 2011 between Rookie ball and Class A short season. He hit .293/.389/.427 with zero home runs, 12 RBI, 14 runs and 2 steals in 27 games at Rookie ball and hit .063/.189/.063 with zero home runs, zero RBI, zero runs and one steal in 11 games at Class A short season. He originally signed with the Pirates as an amateur free agent in 2008 out of Venezuela.
