Earlier I looked at how the first round players from the 2007 draft did during the 2011 season. Yet teams aren't only stocked with former first round picks. Now I'm going to check how players from the second round in 2007 did looking at picks 65 to 70. Traditionally players drafted out of college advance faster than those drafted out of high school and pitchers usually advance faster than position players. Some players might also be traded to help their team get an established player that can help their team improve immediately.
The Tampa Bay Rays drafted RHP William Kline 65th out of Ole Miss. He officially retired from baseball in 2011 although he hadn't played since 2007 due to an arm injury.
The Kansas City Royals drafted RHP Samuel Runion 66th out of AC Reynolds High School in North Carolina. He missed the most of the season rehabbing from Tommy John surgery but returned late to pitch at Rookie ball. He was 1-1 with a 1.00 ERA, 10 strikeouts and 1.22 WHIP in 9 innings over seven games.
The Washington Nationals drafted RHP Jordan Zimmermann 67th out of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He pitched 2011 with the Nationals and was 8-11 with a 3.18 ERA, 124 strikeouts and 1.15 WHIP in 161.1 innings over 26 games.
The Pittsburgh Pirates drafted RHP Matthew Welker 68th out of Arkansas-Fayetteville. He split 2011 between Class A Advanced and Double A. He was 3-5 with a 2.25 ERA, 41 strikeouts, 1.11 WHIP and 6 saves in 52 innings over 36 games at Class A Advanced and was 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA, nine strikeouts and 1.20 WHIP in 10 innings over eight games at Double A.
The Atlanta Braves drafted RHP Joshua Fields 69th out of Georgia. He returned to Georgia and was then drafted by the Mariners with the 20th pick of the first round in 2008. He split the 2011 season between the Mariners Double A and Triple A teams and the Red Sox Double A team after being traded. He was 1-2 with a 2.77 ERA, 26 strikeouts, 1.38 WHIP and 3 saves in 26 innings over 20 games with the Mariners Double A, was 0-0 with a 6.23 ERA, 13 strikeouts and 1.85 WHIP in 13 innings over nine games at Mariners Triple A and was 3-0 with a 3.12 ERA, 25 strikeouts, 1.15 WHIP and one save in 17.1 innings over nine games with the Red Sox Double A.
The Washington Nationals drafted shortstop Jacob Smolinski 70th out of Boylan Catholic High School in Illinois. He played 2011 at Double A and hit .245/.342/.364 with seven home runs, 36 RBI, 42 runs and 6 steals in 116 games.
