Earlier I looked at how the first round players from the 2008 draft did during the 2011 season. Yet teams aren't only stocked with former first round picks. Now I'm going to check how players from the second round in 2008 did looking at picks 71 to 77. Traditionally players drafted out of college advance faster than those drafted out of high school and pitchers usually advance faster than position players. Some players might also be traded to help their team get an established player that can help their team improve immediately.
The Philadelphia Phillies drafted RHP Jason Knapp 71st out of North Hunterdon High School in New Jersey. He was traded to the Indians in 2009. He missed 2011 with a shoulder injury.
The Colorado Rockies drafted outfielder Charles Blackmon 72nd out of Georgia Tech. He split 2011 between Triple A and the Rockies. He hit .337/.393/.572 with 10 home runs, 49 RBI, 49 runs and 12 steals in 58 games at Triple A and hit .255/.277/.296 with one home run, eight RBI, nine runs and 5 steals in 27 games with the Rockies. He missed the second half of 2011 with a broken foot.
The Arizona Diamondbacks drafted RHP Bryan Shaw 73rd out of Cal State Long Beach. He split 2011 between Double A, Triple A and the Diamondbacks. He was 3-1 with a 0.87 ERA, 15 strikeouts, 1.11 WHIP and 7 saves in 20.2 innings over 15 games at Double A, was 1-0 with a 4.58 ERA, 15 strikeouts, 1.02 WHIP and 9 saves in 17.2 innings over 16 games at Triple A and was 1-0 with a 2.54 ERA, 24 strikeouts and 1.34 WHIP in 28.1 innings over 33 games with the Diamondbacks.
The Los Angeles Angels drafted RHP Tyler Chatwood 74th out of Redlands East Valley High School in California. He split 2011 between Triple A and with the Angels. He was 1-2 with a 5.06 ERA, 11 strikeouts and 2.00 WHIP in 16 innings over four games at Triple A and was 6-11 with a 4.75 ERA, 74 strikeouts and 1.67 WHIP in 142 innings over 27 games with the Angels.
The New York Yankees drafted RHP Joseph Scott Bittle 75th out of Ole Miss. He did not sign, returned to pitch at Ole Miss and was drafted by the St Louis Cardinals in the fourth round in 2009. He split 2011 between Rookie ball and Class A short season. He was 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA, one strikeout and 1.87 WHIP in 2.2 innings over three games at Rookie and was 0-0 with a 10.12 ERA, five strikeouts and 3.00 WHIP in 2.2 innings over three games at Class A short season.
