A Marlin named Giancarlo

Another name change is taking place in the Marlins organization this season. Just weeks after the team changed its name to the Miami Marlins their right fielder has announced that he wants to be referred to as Giancarlo Stanton. That's actually not surprising since it is his given name.

A couple years ago in our fantasy draft I called out the name Giancarlo Cruz Michael Stanton. The reaction was confusion and I clarified by calling out Mike Stanton. He had never played above Double A but had shown he could mash by clubbing 39 home runs at age 18 while at Class A and followed up the next season hitting 12 at Class A advanced and 16 at Double A. I knew I had to have him and secured him at $5 although I was willing to go double that.

He split 2010 between Double A where he had a torrid start and the Marlins where he showed he could hit Major League pitching. That year he hit .313/.442/.729 with 21 home runs, 52 RBI, 42 runs and one steal in 53 games at Double A and hit .259/.326/.507 with 22 home runs, 59 RBI, 45 runs and 5 steals in 100 games with the Marlins. He followed that up with his first full season in 2011 hitting .262/.356/.537 with 34 home runs, 87 RBI, 79 runs and 5 steals in 150 games.

This season he should be batting fourth with Jose Reyes, Emilio Bonifacio and Hanley Ramirez before him. That should increase his RBI output tremendously. While the new stadium will be more pitcher friendly with deeper alleys, the powerful Stanton will still put many offerings over the walls. The legend of Giancarlo has just started to be written.

Danys Baez retires

Danys Baez announced his retirement from playing baseball in February 2012. He originally signed with the Indians as an amateur free agent in 1999 out of Cuba. He pitched three seasons with the Indians, two with the Devil Rays, split 2006 with the Dodgers and Braves, two with the Orioles and his final two with the Phillies. For his career he was 40-57 with a 4.25 ERA, 505 strikeouts, 1.13 WHIP and 114 saves in 697 innings over 533 games. He had one All Star selection in 2005 while with the Devil Rays.

College Spotlight 022712

Here is my week two installment of College Spotlight for 2012. This week I am looking at Johnny Coy of Wichita State and Bobby Wahl of Ole Miss.

Junior First baseman Johnny Coy had a monster weekend at the plate feasting on North Dakota pitching. He had two career RBI days with seven in the Friday game and topping that with nine in the Sunday game. In the four game series he was 13 for 20 with two home runs, three doubles, 20 RBI and seven runs. For the season he is hitting .486/.500/.743 with two home runs, 20 RBI, eight runs and zero steals in eight games. In 2011 as a sophomore he hit .274/.344/.421 with seven home runs, 59 RBI, 42 runs and one steal in 64 games.

Sophomore RHP Bobby Wahl had a good outing against UNC Wilmington going seven strong innings while striking out nine and giving up only one hit and two walks against the 25 batters he faced. For the season he is now 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA, 11 strikeouts and 0.83 WHIP in 12 innings over two games. In 2011 getting his feet wet as a freshman he was 0-2 with a 4.80 ERA, 26 strikeouts, 1.47 WHIP and 4 saves in 30 innings over 18 games.

Bengie Molina retires

Bengie Molina announced his retirement from playing baseball in February 2012. Molina originally signed with the Angels as an amateur free agent in 1993 out of Puerto Rico. The catcher sat out 2011 after splitting 2010 between the San Francisco Giants and the Texas Rangers. In 2010 he also became the sixth player in MLB history to play for the two World Series teams in the same season and also added his named to the record books by becoming the first catcher to ever hit a grand slam while hitting for the cycle in the same game. He played for 13 seasons which included another three with the Giants, one with the Blue Jays and seven plus a sniff of coffee with the Angels. He did win a World Series Championship with the Angels in 2002. For his career he hit .274/.307/.411 with 144 home runs, 711 RBI, 457 runs and 3 steals in 1362 games. He also threw out 31% of those that attempted to steal on him. He was the oldest of the three catching Molina brothers with his brother Jose currently with the Rays and Yadier is with the Cardinals.

Dealing with the Dark Side

I imagine nearly every league has one. That person that every other one in the league dreads dealing with because they wear their emotions on their sleeve and spouts every thought that comes into their head. Our league has one and I vowed never to trade with him again. He worships Darth Vader,  is a Yankee fan and his nickname truly is Lucifer. Shudders!

Last season he approached me wanting to know what I wanted Buster Posey after he was injured. I made an offer and he said he only wanted serious offers and would be trading Posey to my main competition. While I like Posey I wasn't about to pay premium prices for possibly damaged goods even in today's age of medical wonders. It turns out the owner of the other team had a similar view and didn't trade for Posey either. Eventually I saw that the league cellar dweller made the deal.

He tried sending another deal toward the trade deadline last year and I declined. He tried to make another trade with another team and publicly berated him for not taking the offer. The season ended and I planned on carrying my team fairly intact into the next draft in our keeper league.

Last month the offers started coming again. The first email I dismissed without much thought. Then came an offer that caught my attention. He offered James Shields and Ben Zobrist in exchange for Luke Hochevar. I had traded for Hochevar at the deadline last season because he was only one dollar and not yet under contract. I knew the Dark Side wanted him for that reason plus he wanted to unload Shields and Zobrist who were only under contract through 2012. I bristled initially because of the economics and accounting involved because it would cut into my available funds for the next draft while deepening his pockets. But I couldn't over look the fact that Shields is a definite upgrade over Hochevar and Zobrist is an upgrade over my second basemen unless Jemile Weeks or Gordan Beckham really breaks out. I decided to agree to the trade while gambling that the extra $23 hit to my payroll would pay off for 2012. Little did I know that this was just a gateway trade.

Then came another offer where he tried for Julio Teheran. I also have Teheran for one dollar and he is not yet under contract. Plus I think he has a bright future coupled by his performance and a scouting report I'd seen that claimed Teheran is the best Latin pitcher since Felix Hernandez. If he approaches that then he is worth more than a few beans. I was also put off by the fact Juan Pierre was part of his package and we know I don't have a high opinion of him and his declining skills. Trade offer declined.

The next offer had him requesting Jaime Garcia in exchange for Jeff Niemann and Wilson Ramos. Garcia is not yet under contract and currently at $4. I planned on putting him until contract for the next couple seasons. Niemann is another 2012 contract he wanted to unload although Ramos is not currently under contract. Again there were other factors involved rather than just the players themselves. Normally getting two players for one is nice but I didn't want to lose the extra roster spot going into the draft plus there would be an additional hit to my budget. Wilson really intrigued me because I have a soft spot for catchers and many consider him to be one of the stars of the future. I countered that I would accept Wilson alone in exchange for Garcia and he quickly agreed. Wilson will be an upgrade over Hank Conger who I will drop so I actually picked up an open roster spot with the deal.

It wasn't long before another offer came in and I wondered if the rest of the league had boycotted the Dark Side. He offered Scott Baker and Niemann in exchange for Allen Craig and Teheran. Baker is yet another 2012 contract he wanted to unload. While I like Baker his $11 tag for 2012 weighed heavy against Craig's $5. Plus this was truly an example of deciding between the present and the future. I believe Craig has a very bright future which he gave glimpses of last season and during the playoffs. I get to see how he performs this season before deciding on putting him under contract next year. Plus we already established Teheran isn't going. I clicked decline and wondered if another would come.

Of course only four days passed when a new email came. He was pitching Niemann again and was willing to take any one of four prospects: Craig, Teheran, Lucas Duda or Brad Peacock. Four players I think have very bright futures. Although I think that batters generally carry more value than pitchers I decided that I was willing to part with Duda. It is true that Niemann does not have a spot currently in the rotation but should get plenty of chances if any of the others falter. There is also the possibility he gets traded out of Tampa. The Niemann for Duda trade was made.

Our draft is less than three weeks away. These deals have changed my original draft strategy somewhat so we'll see how it goes. Plus it will be interesting to watch what the Dark Side does with the extra funds as the draft progresses.

Kelvin De La Cruz traded to Rangers

Kelvin De La Cruz was traded by the Cleveland Indians to the Texas Rangers on February 20, 2012 in exchange for cash. Normally I wouldn't comment on players with no MLB experience unless they are in a trade for a MLB player but the Rangers have already placed De La Cruz on their roster. He pitched Double A at Double A and was 5-6 with a 4.19 ERA, 95 strikeouts, 1.48 WHIP and 2 saves in 86 innings over 23 games. He originally signed with the Indians as an amateur free agent in 2004 of the Dominican Republic.

Four Base Error by MLB on Braun

The way that Major League Baseball dropped the ball on the Ryan Braun situation is a shame. It is not a matter of guilt or innocence any more because he got off on a technicality. Of course Braun has been thumping his chest claiming that truth was on his side.

How did the MLB allow Braun to slide safely into home after handling this so poorly? They gave the test and had the results which showed Braun had much higher levels of testosterone than normal. Yet some where along the way the chain of evidence was broken and Braun was allowed to walk. While the MLB may like to hand down sentences its ability to follow the Law and Order model is severely lacking.

This should be a black mark on the Bud Selig term as commissioner.  The game is trying to move past the steroid era and the handling of an accusation against the reigning National League MVP should have been handled with meticulous precision. The world was watching this through a magnifying glass but Sherlock Holmes wasn't on this case. Did Selig have the best possible people on this? The results would indicate the answer is no. Sure people make mistakes but having the right people in place with the correct protocols and procedures help to ensure that mistakes aren't made. At the very least the credibility of the MLB has been damaged.

College Spotlight 022212

This is the first installment of a new weekly series where I will feature one position player and one pitcher in college. It may be that they had a good week or are having a good season up to that point.

Junior outfielder Michael Burruss of Georgia Southern started the season off strong in a three game series against University of Tennessee at Martin. He had seven hit in 14 at bats that included two home runs and two doubles to go along with one walk. His line to start the season shows he is hitting .500/.533/.1.071 with two home runs, eight RBI, six runs and zero steals in three games. In his Sophomore season in 2011 he hit .300/.330/.410 with three home runs, 46 RBI, 51 runs and 9 steals in 62 games. The Georgia Southern line up also features Eric Phillips and Victor Roache and the trio should help spark the team and each other all season.

Junior RHP Joey Wagman of Cal Poly had an impressive outing against Oklahoma State. He pitched a scoreless eight innings and allowed only two hits and had no walks while facing 27 batters total. He starts the year 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA, five strikeouts and 0.25 WHIP in 8 innings. As a Sophomore in 2011 he was 4-3 with a 3.62 ERA, 52 strikeouts and 1.10 WHIP in 64.2 innings over 17 games. Considering the traditional power Wagman started off against it will be interesting to follow his progress the rest of the season.

Tim Wakefield announced his retirement from playing baseball in February 2012. While at Florida Tech he played first base and set the school's single season records of 22 home runs and 71 RBI plus had the career record of 40 home runs. While drafted as a first baseman he was told he wouldn't advance above Double A and he made the position switch to RHP after learning to throw the knuckleball. He pitched two seasons with the Pirates before being released in April 1995. The Boston Red Sox signed him the following week and he pitched 17 years with the team. He twice won the World Series Championship with the Red Sox in 2004 and 2007. He made one All Star team in 2009. Gary Carter Died

Hall of Fame Catcher Gary Carter passed away today at the age of 57. He lost his battle to brain cancer. The baseball world truly lost one of the great ones.

He held a special spot in my life because I played catcher in little league and high school and Carter was one of the Big Three along with Bench and Fisk. Playing in the 70's and 80's those three gave young catchers some one to look up to and idolize. Besides being a great catcher one thing I remember about Gary Carter was his smile. He came across as extremely likeable and his smile always beamed in his interviews.

Carter played for 19 seasons which started with 11 seasons with the Montreal Expos, five with the New York Mets, one with the San Francisco Giants, one with the Los Angeles Dodgers and one final season with the Expos. His 1986 Mets team won the World Series. He was an All-Star 11 times and was twice the MVP of the All star game. He was originally drafted by the Expos in the third round in 1972. For his career he hit .262/.335/.439 with 324 home runs, 1225 RBI, 1025 runs and 39 steals in 2296 games. Also for his career he threw out 35% of the runners attempting to steal. By comparison only two catchers were higher than that in 2011 and Bench was 43%, Fisk was 34% and future Hall of Fame catcher Ivan Rodriguez is at 46%.

No Cespedes in Miami

I just read that the Oakland Athletics made the surprise move to land Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. Probably the two people happiest about this are me and Emilio Bonifacio although not necessarily in that order. Bonifacio is coming off his break out year and is penciled in as their starting center fielder in 2012. The signing of Cespedes would have hampered his chances to build on that since Cespedes will likely play in center and it would have pushed Bonifacio back into an utility role. I have long been a fan of Bonifacio and he'll be one I will carry over on the roster in my keeper league. Given the chance to bat second in that line up as projected he could easily put up much better numbers than last year.

2011 Where are they now 2009 MLB draft picks 76 to 80

Earlier I looked at how the first round players from the 2009 draft did during the 2011 season. Yet teams aren't only stocked with former first round picks. Now I'm going to check how players from the second round in 2009 did looking at picks 76 to 80. Traditionally players drafted out of college advance faster than those drafted out of high school and pitchers usually advance faster than position players. Some players might also be traded to help their team get an established player that can help their team improve immediately.

The New York Yankees drafted catcher John Murphy 76th out of the Pendleton School in Florida. He split 2011 between Class A and Class A Advanced. He hit .297/.343/.457 with six home runs, 32 RBI, 31 runs and 2 steals in 63 games at Class A and hit .259/.270/.365 with one home run, 14 RBI, eight runs and zero steals in 23 games at Class A Advanced.

The Boston Red Sox drafted RHP William Alexander Wilson 77th out of Texas A&M. He split 2011 between Double A and Triple A. He was 9-4 with a 3.05 ERA, 99 strikeouts and 1.25 WHIP in 112 innings over 21 games at Double A and was 1-0 with a 3.43 ERA, 24 strikeouts and 1.24 WHIP in 21 innings over four games at Triple A.

The Tampa Bay Rays drafted shortstop Kenneth Diekroeger 78th out of Menlo School in California. He did not sign and enrolled to play baseball at Stanford. He played 2011 at Stanford as a sophomore and hit .293/.356/.364 with two home runs, 31 RBI, 31 runs and 2 steals in 56 games.

The Los Angeles Angels drafted LHP Patrick Corbin 80th out of Chipola Junior College. He pitched 2011 at Double A and was 9-8 with a 4.21 ERA, 142 strikeouts and 1.32 WHIP in 160.1 innings over 26 games.

2011 Where are they now 2009 MLB draft picks 71 to 75

Earlier I looked at how the first round players from the 2009 draft did during the 2011 season. Yet teams aren't only stocked with former first round picks. Now I'm going to check how players from the second round in 2009 did looking at picks 71 to 75. Traditionally players drafted out of college advance faster than those drafted out of high school and pitchers usually advance faster than position players. Some players might also be traded to help their team get an established player that can help their team improve immediately.

The Chicago White Sox drafted LHP David Holmberg 71st out of Port Charlotte High School in Florida. He split 2011 between Class A and Class A Advanced. The Milwaukee Brewers drafted catcher Cameron Garfield 74th out of Murrieta Valley High School in California. He split 2011 between Rookie ball and Class A before a knee injury ended his season. 2011 Where are they now 2009 MLB draft picks 66 to 70

Earlier I looked at how the first round players from the 2009 draft did during the 2011 season. Yet teams aren't only stocked with former first round picks. Now I'm going to check how players from the second round in 2009 did looking at picks 66 to 70. Traditionally players drafted out of college advance faster than those drafted out of high school and pitchers usually advance faster than position players. Some players might also be traded to help their team get an established player that can help their team improve immediately.

The Florida Marlins drafted RHP Bryan Berglund was drafted 66th out of Royal High School in California. He missed 2011 with a shoulder injury.

The St Louis Cardinals drafted catcher Robert Stock 67th out of Southern Cal. He split 2011 between Class A and Class A Advanced.

Bob Herold as Odysseus

The University of Nebraska Omaha baseball team enters an new era as they make the jump to Division I this spring. Yet looking at the schedule it appears that Head Coach Bob Herold is auditioning for the role of Odysseus by the fact that the vast majority of their games are on the road. You will find the word "at" on the schedule 31 times. Plus there are an additional seven games played at the 2012 RussMatt Central Florida Invitational which is an annual spring break event. The UNO Mavericks have a total of four home games on their schedule.

They start off the season against the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders. That certainly plays into the Odysseus theme as they battle Islanders, Black Knights, Braves and Rebels on the road. Of course with as many miles logged comparisons could be made to Lewis and Clark. The team will criss cross the country from Texas to Washington to Florida. Like Lewis and Clark they will see much wild life in the form of mascots such as Cougars, Tigers and Bears. Oh my! Actually on the road they see two sets of Cougars, two sets of Wildcats, Tigers, Bears, Bison, Gophers, Redhawks, Blackbirds, Gamecocks, Hawkeyes and Blue Jays. They even wander across some Mastodons.

Their only home games include three against North Dakota State and one against BYU. More Bison and Cougars to add to the list. Originally BYU was not listed as a home game but when they added a game at Creighton it must have helped to convince them to spend an extra day in Omaha.

In all seriousness it will be fun and interesting to watch how UNO does this season. They don't play many traditional baseball powers and their biggest challenges should be against Washington State, Missouri and Creighton. While Creighton is in UNO's backyard both games in the series are at Creighton on March 27th and May 9th. That could help the genesis of a local rivalry.

Coach Herold enters 2012 in his 13th year as UNO's skipper. He has had some success with a 408-244-2 record and his teams made it to the post season seven times and won three conference championships. Three times he was the NCC Coach of the Year taking the honor in 2002, 2005 and 2008. Now Herold helps guide the team as they enter the Summit League although only IPFW, North Dakota State and  Oakland are on the schedule this year.

The Mavericks top four hitters from 2011 all return. Shortstop/third baseman Brady Hohl hit .408/.472/.534 with five home runs, 35 RBI, 59 runs and 15 steals in 55 games. Second baseman Caleb Palensky hit .366/.432/.549 with four home runs, 36 RBI, 35 runs and 2 steals in 50 games. Outfielder Mark Waldron hit .364/.463/.438 with zero home runs, 32 RBI, 31 runs and 5 steals in 39 games. Outfielder Connor McCrite hit .359/.394/.534 with two home runs, 14 RBI, 22 runs and 5 steals in 36 games.

Two of the Mavericks starting pitchers from 2011 return. RHP Matt Tew was 6-1 with a 2.98 WHIP, 39 strikeouts and 1.43 WHIP in 48.1 innings over 13 games. LHP Cory Buckley was 5-3 with a 3.57 ERA, 29 strikeouts, 1.42 WHIP and 2 saves in 45.1 innings over 14 games.

I'll be watching UNO make the transition and will be rooting them on as a fan and as an alum. Go Mavs!
