Jim Thome traded to Orioles

Jim Thome was traded by Philadelphia Phillies to the Baltimore Orioles on June 30, 2012. In exchange the Phillies receive minor league players Kyle Simon and Gabriel Lino.


Thome is a first baseman in his 22nd MLB season that has also included time with the Indians, Twins, Dodgers and White Sox. The season he is hitting .242/.338/.516 with 5 HR, 15 RBI, 9 R and 0 SB in 30 games. For his career he has hit .277/.402/.556 with 609 HR, 1689 RBI, 1575 R and 19 SB in 2515 games. He was originally drafted by the Indians in the 13th round in 1989. Thome will be 42 on August 27.


Simon is a RHP who was pitching with the Orioles Class A Advanced team Frederick Keys. This season he is 2-8 with a 3.96 ERA, 49 K, 1.47 WHIP in 72.2 IP over 14 games. He was originally drafted by the Orioles in the fourth round in 2011. Simon will be 22 on August 18.


Lino is a catcher was was playing with the Orioles Class A team Delmarva Shorebirds. This season he is hitting .218/.282/.340 with 4 HR, 18 RBI, 28 R and 1 SB in 56 games. He originally signed with the Orioles as an amateur free agent in 2009 out of Venezuela. Lino turned 19 on May 17.
