Wandy Rodriguez traded to Pirates

Wandy Rodriguez was traded by the Houston Astros to the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 24, 2012. In exchange the Astros received Robbie Grossman, Rudy Owens and Colton Cain.


RHP Rodriguez had played his entire 8 year MLB career with the Astros. In 2012 he was 7-9 with a 3.79 ERA, 89 K, 1.27 WHIP in 130.2 IP over 21 games with Houston. For his MLB career he is 80-84 with a 4.04 ERA, 1093 K, 1.34 WHIP in 1306.2 IP over 227 games. He originally signed with the Astros as an amateur free agent in 1999 out of the Dominican Republic. Rodriguez turned 33 on January 18.


Grossman is an outfielder was was playing with the Pirates Double A team in Altoona. In 2012 he was hitting .262/.374/.403 with 7 HR, 35 RBI, 58 R, 9 SB in 94 games with Altoona. He was originally drafted by the Pirates in the sixth round in 2008. Grossman will be 23 on September 16.


LHP Owens was pitching with the Pirates Triple A team in Indianapolis. In 2012 he was 8-5 with a 3.14 ERA, 85 K, 1.17 WHIP in 117.1 IP over 19 games with Indianapolis. He was originally drafted by the Pirates in the 28th round in 2006. Owens will be 25 on December 18.


LHP Cain was pitching with the Pirates Class A Advanced team in Bradenton, In 2012 he was 3-5 with a 4.20 ERA, 51 K, 1.24 WHIP in 75.0 IP over 16 games with Bradenton. He was originally drafted by the Pirates in the eighth round in 2009. Cain turned 21 on February 5th.
