Jonathan Sanchez and Ryan Verdugo will forever be linked as the bookend components that the Kansas City Royals got back in the Melky Cabrera trade. The last two nights their pitching performances were under the microscope as each had horrible outings for the Royals. On Monday Sanchez had the line 1.1 IP, 7 H, 7 R, y ER 1 BB 2 K, 2 HR in 50 pitches as his record dipped to 1-6. The Royals had seen enough and showed Sanchez the door and called up Verdugo for the start on Tuesday in part because Everett Teaford was forced into action on Monday. In his rookie debut Verdugo was hit hard and had the line of 1.2 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 2 K 1 HR in 55 pitches. It is likely Verdugo will head back to Omaha for more seasoning.
The fact that they were hit so hard by a Seattle Mariners team that is now 39-53 is alarming. Couple that with the fact the Royals have an aversion to playing at home this season with a 15-27 home record. The pitching staff is in shambles and needs more than a band aid fix. Whether its at the trade deadline later this month or in the off season an attempt to create a viable starting five should be a priority and their deep farm system should provide the capital to make such trades. Fingers crossed.
