Jose Altuve of the Houston Astros was selected the Sporting News MLB Player of the Year for 2016. This season the second baseman hit .338/.396/.531 with 24 HR, 96 RBI, 108 R, 30 SB in 161 games.
He finished with 84 votes from his fellow players. Mookie Betts of the Red Sox was second with 64 votes. The remaining of the top five were David Ortiz (Red Sox, 41), Kris Bryant (Cubs, 36) and Daniel Murphy (Nationals, 26).
He originally signed with the Astros in 2007 as an amateur free agent out of Venezuela. Altuve turned 26 on May 6th.
