UCLA defeated Mississippi State 8-0 to win the baseball national championship at the College World Series in baseball. The Bruins swept the championship series 2 games to none and went undefeated in Omaha with a 5-0 record. It was their first national championship in baseball and the 109th in school history across all sports.
The Bruins had stellar pitching performances in every game but the last one was their best offensively. Eric Filia proved the big bat going 2 for 3 with a career best 5 RBI. Filia had a sacrifice fly in the first inning which allowed Brian Carroll to score. Filia then sacrificed to the pitcher in the third which again allowed Carroll to score. Later in the third Pat Valaika singled to knock in Kevin Kramer. In the fourth Cody Regis singled to drive in Kevin Williams and Regis later scored on a sacrifice fly by Kramer. Filia singled in the sixth to knock in Regis and Kramer. Filia delivered his final blow in the eighth when he hit a single on which Christoph Bono and Carroll scored. RHP Nick Vander Tuig was dominant over eight innings allowing five hits while striking out six.
