UCLA defeated Mississippi State 3-1 in game one of the best of three championship series. It was also game 13 of the College World Series in Omaha. It was a game of many missed opportunities as both teams left many runners on base but UCLA capitalized best. In the first Kevin Kramer struck out swinging but reached first on a wild pitch by Bulldog starter Trevor Fitts. Kramer later scored on a single by Pat Valaika. The Bruins added to their lead in the fourth when Eric Filia singled to drive in Brenton Allen and Brian Carroll. Mississippi State got their only run in the fourth when C T Bradford walked with the bases loaded and Alex Detz scored. UCLA starter Adam Plutko went six strong innings and only gave up four hits. David Berg picked up his NCAA record 24th save of the season by pitching the last 1.2 innings. The two teams play again on Tuesday.
