Chasing 50-50 043015

This is the fourth year of my Chasing 50-50 segment. It started three seasons ago as we followed Matt Kemp then of the Dodgers in his self proclaimed attempt to hit 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases. The 2015 season is under way and we are going to follow Kemp's efforts to see if he can make another run. As long as he is playing Kemp will always be part of this. Regulars Mike Trout of the Angels and Carlos Gonzalez of the Rockies are still in the mix because I think they also have the speed\power combo capable of reaching the mark some day. Plus we will also start with Carlos Gomez of the Brewers, George Springer of the Astros and Joc Pederson of the Dodgers. Others will be added throughout the season as their production warrants. 50/50 is a lofty goal but this is also a way to honor the guys that do possess the power and speed tools. This is week three of the chase.

Pawtucket is the Triple A team of the Boston Red Sox. He was originally drafted by the Red Sox with the 31st pick of the first round in 2012. Johnson turned 24 on December 7th.

Two Major One Minor 042815

Here is my third Two Major One Minor segment of 2015. This is my fifth year of doing this series where I feature two Major League players and one minor league player each week. This week I am featuring Lorenzo Cain, Jake Marisnick and Roman Quinn. 

Lorenzo Cain is the center fielder for the Kansas City Royals who is continuing the break out he started in the 2014 play offs. His bat is starting to match his stellar glove as he leads one of the hottest offenses in the MLB. This season he is hitting .362/.438/.536 with 2 HR, 12 RBI, 14 R, 5 SB in 18 games. How well he continues that over the grind of the season will play a big part of the Royals keeping up with the Tigers. Although he has one error this season he does rank in the top four in both total chances and range factor. He is now in his sixth MLB season over which he has hit .283/.332/.399 with 19 HR, 156 RBI, 171 R, 64 SB in 376 games. He was originally drafted by the Brewers in the 17th round in 2004 and was traded to the Royals in 2011. Cain turned 29 on April 13. 

Jake Marisnick is the center fielder for the Houston Astros and appears to be a player ready to break out on a team ready to break out. This season he is hitting .362/.415/.574 with 2 HR, 8 RBI, 10 R, 6 SB in 16 games. He has helped his team of rising stars race out front to the top spot in the American League West. He is entering his third MLB season and what should be his first full one as he has hit .244/.284/.334 with 6 HR, 32 R, 37 R, 20 SB in 121 games. He was originally drafted by the Blue Jays in the third round in 2009 and was traded to the Marlins in 2012 and the Astros in 2014. Marisnick turned 24 on March 30.

Quinn is a young outfielder for Double A Reading of the Philadelphia Phillies. He spent his first two seasons in the minors at shortstop and started to transition to center field last year. It's way too early to pair the names but the name that comes to mind with those position combinations is Hall of Famer Robin Yount. Quinn is off to a hot start hitting .348/.394/.561 with 2 HR, 6 RBI, 18 R, 8 SB in 17 games. He had reached the 30 SB mark in each of his first three minor league seasons. The Phillies originally drafted him in the second round in 2011. Quinn will be 22 on May 14.

Tripp Martin South Atlantic League POW 042015 to 042615

Tripp Martin of the Hickory Crawdads was selected the South Atlantic League Player of the Week for the span of April 20, 2015 through April 26, 2015. For the week he hit .346/.452/.923 with 3 2B, 4 HR, 8 RBI, 6 R, 0 SB and 2 BB. This season the third baseman is hitting .324/.410/.853 with 4 HR, 8 RBI, 8 R, 0 sB in 10 games. Hickory is the Class A team of the Texas Rangers. He was originally drafted by the Rangers in the 22nd round in 2014. Martin turned 23 on April 2nd.

Tony Zych traded to Mariners

Tony Zych was traded by the Chicago Cubs to the Seattle Mariners on April 2, 2015 for a PTBNL. The RHP pitched in 2014 at Double A Tennessee where he was 4-5, 5.09 ERA, 35 K, 1.59 WHIP, .329 BAA, 2 SV in 58.1 IP over 45 games. He was originally drafted by the Cubs in the fourth round in 2011. Zych will be 25 on August 7th.

Hunter Morris traded to Pirates

Hunter Morris was traded by the Milwaukee Brewers to the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 2, 2015 for a PTBNL. The first baseman split 2014 between Rookie Arizona, Double A Huntsville and Triple A Nashville. Gregorio Petit traded to Yankees

Gregorio Petit was traded by the Houston Astros to the New York Yankees on April 1, 2015 in exchange for cash. The SS\2B\3B split 2014 between Triple A Oklahoma City and the Astros. He hit .297/.340/.457 with 10 HR, 43 RBI, 46 R, 1 SB in 85 games at Oklahoma City and .278/.300/.423 with 2 HR, 9 RBI, 14 R, 0 SB in 37 games with the Astros. This season he has started hitting .208/.286/.333 with 0 HR, 5 RBI, 4 R, 0 SB in 13 games with the Yankees. Over four MLB seasons with the Yankees, Astros and Athletics he has hit .269/.299/.383 with 2 HR, 15 RBI, 24 R, 0 SB in 75 games. He originally signed with the Athletics in 2001 as an amateur free agent out of Venezuela. Petit turned 30 on December 10.

College Spotlight 042715

Here is my ninth installment of College Spotlight for 2015. This week I am looking at Anthony Sequeira of Oral Roberts and Brendan McKay of Louisville.

Sequeira is a senior 1B\RHP from Petaluma High School, in Petaluma, CA plus he played at Santa Rosa Junior College. On Sunday he performed in the field and at the plate in a 8-7 victory over South Dakota State in 10 innings. Batting fourth as the DH he was 3 for 5 with a double, 2 RBI and a run plus he pitched the last four innings in long relief to earn the save. His pitching line was 4.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K in 52 pitches. This season at the plate he has hit .344/.442/.554 with 7 HR, 42 RBI, 41 R, 2 SB in 41 games. On the mound he is 1-0, 1.17 ERA, 30 K, 0.74 WHIP, .163 BAA, 6 SV in 23.0 IP over 17 games. Last season he hit .253/.322/.305 with 0 HR, 22 RBI, 24 R, 2 SB in 56 games but did not pitch. The Golden Eagles are 29-13 this season.

McKay is a freshman 1B\LHP from Blackhawk High School in Darlington, PA. Last weekend in a three game sweep over Bethune-Cookman he was 5 for 10 with two doubles, four runs and two walks. He also picked up the win pitching Saturday as his line was 6.0 IP, 5 R, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 11 K in 111 pitches. This season he is hitting .326/.455/.424 with 1 HR, 22 RBI, 25 R, 4 SB in 40 games. On the mound he has been 7-1, 1.83 ERA, 78 K, 0.83 WHIP, .145 BAA, 4 SV in 59.0 IP over 14 games with seven starts. He had been selected by the St Louis Cardinals in the 34th round on the 2014 MLB draft after being twice selected the Pennsylvania Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year. His influence has helped push the Louisville Cardinals to a 34-10 record and on track for the road to Omaha as the team hovers around the top ten.

Bubba and Logan Update 042515

This is the second update for 2015 on Bubba Starling and Logan Moon. Bubba Starling was the Royals first round pick in 2011 and is from Gardner, KS. Starling is still young as he will be 23 on August 3rd. Moon was drafted by the Royals in the sixth round in 2014. Moon played in college at Missouri Southern and is a bit older having turned 23 on February 15. Both Starling and Moon started out 2015 as teammates in the outfield at Class A Advanced Wilmington.

Bubba had a short week at Wilmington as he hit 7 for 12 with 1 2B, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 3 R and 1 SB in 4 games. His hot start has earned him a promotion to Double A Northwest Arkansas but he has yet to play a game there. Overall at Wilmington he hit .386/.471/.614 with 2 HR, 12 RBI, 6 R, 2 SB in 12 games.

Chasing 50-50 042315

This is the fourth year of my Chasing 50-50 segment. It started three seasons ago as we followed Matt Kemp then of the Dodgers in his self proclaimed attempt to hit 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases. The 2015 season is under way and we are going to follow Kemp's efforts to see if he can make another run. As long as he is playing Kemp will always be part of this. Regulars Mike Trout of the Angels and Carlos Gonzalez of the Rockies are still in the mix because I think they also have the speed\power combo capable of reaching the mark some day. Plus we will also start with Carlos Gomez of the Brewers, George Springer of the Astros and Joc Pederson of the Dodgers. Others will be added throughout the season as their production warrants. 50/50 is a lofty goal but this is also a way to honor the guys that do possess the power and speed tools. This is week two of the chase.
