Sonny Gray traded to Yankees

Sonny Gray was traded by the Oakland Athletics to the New York Yankees on July 31, 2017 along with international signing bonus pool space. The Athletics in exchange received Dustin Fowler, James Kaprielian and Jorge Mateo.

RHP Gray had split 2017 between Class A Advanced Stockton and Triple A Nashville while rehabbing and with the Athletics. He was 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 6 K, 0.20 WHIP, .063 BAA in 5.0 IP in 1 GS at Stockton, 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 7 K, 0.33 WHIP, .095 BAA in 6.0 IP in 1 GS at Nashville and 6-5, 3.43 ERA, 94 K, 1.18 WHIP, .229 BAA in 97.0 IP over 16 GS with the Athletics. Over five MLB seasons with the Athletics he was 44-36, 3.42 ERA, 607 K, 1.20 WHIP, .235 BAA in 705.0 IP over 114 games with 112 GS. He was originally drafted by the Athletics with the 18th pick of the first round in 2011. Gray turned 27 on November 7th.

Outfielder Fowler had split 2017 between Triple A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and the Yankees. He hit 87 for 297, .293/.329/.542 with 13 HR, 43 RBI, 49 R, 13 SB in 70 games at SWB and injured his right knee in outfield before first at bat in first game with Yankees. Currently on the 60 day DL. He was originally drafted by the Yankees in the 18th round in 2013/ Fowler turned 22 on December 29.

RHP Kaprielian has not pitched in 2017 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. In 2016 he was 2-1, 1.50 ERA, 22 K, 0.61 WHIP, .136 BAA in 18.0 IP over 3 GS at Class A Advanced Tampa. He was originally drafted by the Yankees with the 16th pick of the first round in 2015. Kaprielian turne 23 on March 2nd.

Shortstop Mateo had split 2017 between Tampa and Double A Trenton. He hit 66 for 275, .240/.288/.400 with 4 HR, 11 RBI, 39 R, 28 SB in 69 games at Tampa and 36 for 120, .300/.381/.525 with 4 HR, 26 RBI, 26 R, 11 SB in 30 games at Trenton. He originally signed with the Yankees in 2012 as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Mateo turned 22 on June 23.
