Joe Smith traded to Indians

Joe Smith was traded by the Toronto Blue Jays to the Cleveland Indians on July 31, 2017. The Blue Jays in exchange received Thomas Pannone and Samad Taylor.

RHP Smith had split 2017 between Triple A Buffalo while rehabbing and with the Blue Jays. He was 0-0, 3.86 ERA, 3 K, 1.29 WHIP, .333 BAA in 2.1 IP over 3 games at Buffalo and 2-4, 2.03 ERA, 51 K, 1.12 WHIP, .229 BAA in 35.2 IP over 38 games with the Blue Jays. Over 11 MLB seasons with the Blue Jays, Cubs, Angels, Indians and Mets he was 44-28, 2.95 ERA, 527 K, 1.19 WHIP, 226 BAA, 29 SV in 606.1 IP over 677 games. He was originally drafted by the Mets in the third round in 2006. Smith turned 33 on March 22.

LHP Pannone had split 2017 between Class A Advanced Lynchburg and Double A Akron. He was 2-0, 0.00 ERA, 39 K, 0.61 WHIP, .111 BAA in 27.2 IP over 5 GS at Lynchburg and 6-1, 2.62 ERA, 81 K, 1.07 WHIP, .223 BAA in 82.1 IP over 14 GS at Akron. He was originally drafted by the Indians in the ninth round in 2013. Pannone turned 23 on April 23.

Second Baseman Taylor had hit 36 for 120, .300/.328/.467 with 4 HR, 19 RBI, 18 R, 4 SB in 28 games at Short Season A Mahining Valley in 2017. He was originally drafted by the Indians in the 10th round in 2016. Taylor turned 19 on July 11.
