Michael Fulmer of the Detroit Tigers was named the 2016 American League Rookie of the Year after receiving 26 first place votes by the Baseball Writers Association of America for a total of 142 points. The only other player to receive first place votes was Gary Sanchez of the Yankees with 4 first place votes and 91 total. Others receiving votes were Tyler Naquin of the Indians with 20 points, Chris Devenski (Astros, 7), Edwin Diaz (Mariners, 4), Nomar Mazara (Rangers, 4) and Tim Anderson (White Sox, 2).
The RHP split 2016 between Triple A Toledo and the Tigers. He was 1-1, 4.11 ERA, 20 K, 1.37 WHIP, .258 BAA in 15.1 IP over 3 games at Toledo and 11-7, 3.06 ERA, 132 K, 1.12 WHIP, .231 BAA in 159.0 IP over 26 games with the Tigers. He was originally drafted by the Mets with the 44th pick of the first round in 2011 and traded to the Tigers in 2015. Fulmer turned 23 on March 15.
