Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels was named the 2016 American League Most Valuable Player by the Baseball Writers Association of America. He received 19 first place votes and 356 points total. Others receiving first place votes were Mookie Betts of the Red Sox with nine and 311 points total, David Ortiz of the Red Sox with one and 147 points and Adrian Beltre of the Rangers with one and 135 points. The rest of the top five were Jose Altuve of the Astros with 227 points, Josh Donaldson (Blue Jays, 200) and Manny Machado (Orioles, 150).
Others receiving votes were Robinson Cano (Mariners, 79), Francisco Lindor (Indians, 56), Miguel Cabrera (Tigers, 56), Zach Britton (Orioles, 11), Kyle Seager (Mariners, 10), Brian Dozier (Twins, 9), Edwin Encarnacion (Blue Jays, 7), Nelson Cruz (Mariners, 6), Chris Sale (White Sox, 3), Jose Ramirez (Indians, 2), Justin Verlander (Tigers, 2), Adam Eaton (White Sox, 1), Corey Kluber (Indians, 1) and Evan Longoria (Rays, 1).
The outfielder hit .315/.441/.550 with 29 HR, 100 RBI, 123 R, 30 SB in 159 games. Over six MLB seasons with the Angels he has hit .306/.405/.557 with 168 HR, 497 RBI, 600 R, 143 SB in 811 games. Trout won the 2014 AL MVP and finished second in AL MVP voting in 2012, 2013 and 2015. He was originally drafted by the Angels with the 25th pick of the first round in 2009. Trout turned 25 on August 7th.
