Jedd Gyorko was traded by the San Diego Padres to the St Louis Cardinals on December 8, 2015. The Padres in exchange received Jon Jay.

Jay is an outfielder who split 2015 between Class A Peoria and Triple A Memphis while rehabbing and with the Cardinals. He hit .000/.091/.000 with 0 HR, 1 RBI, 0 R, 0 SB in 3 games at Peoria, .385/.429/.615 with 1 HR, 1 RBI, 3 R, 2 SB in 4 games at Memphis and .210/.306/.257 with 1 HR, 10 RBI, 25 R, 0 SB in 79 games with the Cardinals. Over six MLB seasons with the Cardinals he hit .287/.354/.384 with 29 HR, 227 RBI, 325 R, 43 SB in 757 games. He was originally drafted by the Cardinals in the second round in 2006. Jay turned 31 on March 15.
