Wilson Betemit traded to Tigers

Infielder Wilson Betemit was traded by the Kansas City Royals to the Detroit Tigers on July 20, 2011. In exchange the Royals receive minor league players Antonio Cruz and Julio Rodriguez.


In his career Betemit has been a super utility player with experience at first, second, third, shortstop, outfield and DH. In his career before the Royals he also played for the White Sox, Yankees, Dodgers and Braves. For his career he has hit .268 with 58 home runs, 224 RBI, 212 runs, and 8 steals in 657 games. Before the trade this season he was hitting .281 with three home runs, 27 RBI, 29 runs and 3 steals in 57 games. He originally signed with the Braves as an amateur free agent in 1996 out of the Dominican Republic.


Antonio Cruz is a LHP at the Class A level of the minors and is 19. He started the season as a starter but has since moved to the bullpen. He has 10 starts and in 22 games is 2-6 with a 3.11 ERA, 58 strikeouts, 1.27 WHIP and one save. He originally signed with the Tigers as an amateur free agent in 2009 out of the Dominican Republic.


Julio Rodriguez is a catcher at the Class A advanced level of the minors and is 20. This season he is hitting .283 with one home run, 27 RBI, 20 runs and zero steals in 66 games. He originally signed with the Tigers as an amateur free agent in 2006 out of the Dominican Republic.
