Mike Aviles traded to Red Sox

Mike Aviles was traded from the Kansas City Royals to the Boston Red Sox on July 30, 2011. In exchange the Royals receive Yamaico Navarro and minor league player Kendal Volz.


Aviles is a utility player who has played second, third, short and DH in his four year career with the Royals. Before the trade he was hitting .222 with five home runs, 31 RBI, 14 runs and 10 steals in 53 games. For his career he has hit .286 with 24 home runs, 122 RBI, 155 runs and 33 steals in 301 games. He was originally drafted by the Royals in the seventh round in 2003.


Navarro is a super utility player that has spent time in Triple A and the Majors this season playing second, third, short. all three outfield positions and DH. In Triple A he hit .258 with five home runs, 13 RBI, 25 runs and 3 steals in 34 games. Playing with the Red Sox he hit .216 with one home run, three RBI, six runs and zero steals in 16 games. He originally signed with the Red Sox as an amateur free agent in 2005 out of the Dominican Republic.


Kendal Volz is a RHP at the Class A advanced level of the minors. Before the trade he was 2-3 with a 3.33 ERA, 58 strikeouts, 1.05 WHIP and 2 saves in 51.1 innings over 31 games. He was originally drafted by the Red Sox in the ninth round in 2009.
