Kosuke Fukudome traded to Indians

Kosuke Fukudome was traded by the Chicago Cubs to the Cleveland Indians on July 28, 2011. In exchange the Cubs receive minor league players Carlton Smith and Abner Abreu.


Outfielder Kosuke Fukudome was in his fourth season with the Cubs after nine seasons with the Chunichi Dragons in Japan. While playing in Japan he hit .305 with 192 home runs, 647 RBI, 713 runs and 71 steals in 1094 games. As a Cub he hit .262 with 37 home runs, 169 RBI, 236 runs and 27 steals in 513 games. Before the trade he was hitting .273 with three home runs, 13 RBI, 33 runs and 2 steals in 87 games this season.


Carlton Smith is a RHP at the Triple A level of the minors. This season he is 2-3 with a 4.50 ERA, 46 strikeouts,   1.41 WHIP, 2 saves in 46 innings over 34 games. He was originally drafted by the Indians in the 21st round in 2004.


Abner Abreu is an outfielder at the Class A Advanced level of the minors. This season he is hitting .244 with 12 home runs, 35 RBI, 42 runs and 19 steals in 91 games. He originally signed with the Indians as an amateur free agent in 2006 out of the Dominican Republic.
