Matt Thornton traded to Red Sox

Matt Thornton was traded by the Chicago White Sox to the Boston Red Sox on July 13, 2013. In exchange the White Sox received Brandon Jacobs.

LHP Thornton has 10 seasons MLB experience pitching with the White Sox and Mariners. Prior to the trade he was 0-3, 3.86 ERA. 21 K, 1.25 WHIP in 28.0 IP over 40 games with the White Sox. For his MLB career he is 32-42, 3.51 ERA, 579 K, 1.28 WHIP, 23 SV in 561.1 IP over 596 games. He was originally drafted by the Mariners with the 22nd pick of the first round in 1998. Thornton will be 37 on September 15.

Jacobs is an outfielder who had split 2013 between Class A Advanced Salem and Double A Portland of the Boston Red Sox prior to the trade. He hit .244/.334/.440 with 11 HR, 44 RBI, 44 R, 10 SB in 81 games at Salem and hit .375/.375/.750 with 0 HR, 0 RBI, 2 R, 0 SB in 3 games at Portland. He was originally drafted by the Red Sox in the 10th round in 2009. Jacobs will be 23 on December 8th.
