Alex Avila and Justin Wilson were traded by the Detroit Tigers to the Chicago Cubs on July 31, 2017. The Tigers in exchange received Jeimer Candelario, Isaac Paredes and a PTBNL.
Catcher Avila hit 60 for 219, .274/.394/.475 with 11 HR, 32 RBI, 30 R, 0 SB in 77 games with the Tigers in 2017. Over nine MLB seasons with the Tigers and White Sox he hit .243/.350/.402 with 84 HR, 325 RBI, 295 R, 7 SB in 817 games. His career MLB caught stealing rate is 29%. He was originally drafted by the Tigers in the fifth round in 2008. Avila turned 30 on January 29.
LHP Wilson was 3-4, 2.68 ERA, 55 K, 0.94 WHIP, .157 BAA, 13 SV in 40.1 IP over 42 games with the Tigers in 2017. Over six MLB seasons with the Tigers, Yankees and Pirates he was 21-14, 3.20 ERA, 313 K, 1.19 WHIP, .220 BAA, 14 SV in 298.1 IP over 318 games. He was originally drafted by the Pirates in the fifth round in 2008, traded to the Yankees in 2014 and traded to the Tigers in 2015.
Third baseman Candelario had split 2017 between Triple A Iowa and the Cubs. He hit 76 for 286, .266/.361/.507 with 12 HR, 52 RBI, 39 R, 0 SB in 81 games at Iowa and 5 for 33, .152/.222/.303 with 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 R, 0 SB in 11 games with the Cubs. Over two MLB seasons with the Cubs he hit .136/.240/.250 with 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 R, 0 SB in 16 games. He originally signed with the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent in 2010. Candelario turned 23 on November 24.
Shortstop Paredes hit 89 for 337, .264/.343/.401 with 7 HR, 49 RBI, 49 R, 2 SB in 92 games at Class A South Bend in 2017. He originally signed with the Cubs in 2015 as an amateur free agent out of Mexico. Paredes turned 18 on February 18.
