This appears to be a bad year for players taken first over all in the MLB draft. Earlier this year I wrote about 1991 Number One pick Brien Taylor and his trouble with the law. In the off season much was made of 1999 Number One Josh Hamilton as he wrestled with his demons and fell off the wagon. The 2004 Number One Matt Bush followed that by being arrested for DUI and fleeing the scene of an accident where he ran a man over. Within the last week 2004 Number One was arrested for assault and a possible hate crime. Then yesterday it was announced that 2008 Number One Tim Beckham will be suspended for 50 games for violating the minor league drug program by testing positive for marijuana a second time.
The old adage claims that power corrupts. Being the first player taken in a draft will bring a certain amount of wealth, fame and power. Other than relying on their inner circle I would like to how much guidance is offered by MLB itself. I know the NFL offers some guidance to its players as they are being drafted. It might be worth looking into.
