Kerry Wood retires

Kerry Wood announced his retirement from playing baseball in May 2012. RHP Wood played 14 seasons for the Cubs (1998, 2000-2008, 2011-2012), Indians (2009-2010) and Yankees (2010). This season he was 0-2 with an 8.31 ERA, 6 K, and 2.19 WHIP in 8.2 IP over 10 games. For his career he was 86-75 with a 3.67 ERA, 1582 K, 1.27 WHIP and 63 SV in 1380.0 IP over 446 games. He was originally drafted by the Cubs with the fourth pick of the first round in 1995.


Wood was the 1998 NL Rookie of the Year. He was an All Star twice with the Cubs in 2003 and 2008. Wood finished his career with the second highest strike outs per nine inning rate over at least 1000 innings with a K/9 of 10.3. He trails only Randy Johnson with a K/9 of 10.6 for his career.
