Those darn closers

You have to wonder as he made his preparations to pitch tonight if Zach Greinke caught the Phillies-Astros game and winced a bit for Cliff Lee? Lee pitched a strong eight innings and handed the ball over for the ninth only to watch Chad Qualls try to undo his efforts. Lee had a final line of 8.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 10 K with 110 pitches.

In his last outing Greinke had pitched a masterful eight innings against the Reds. His line was 8.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 11 K with 104 pitches. He handed the ball to John Axford for the ninth and watched a 1-0 lead become a 2-1 loss.

At least Lee's Phillies were able to come back and win their game 4-3 in the 10th. It would seem that these two games might showcase a love\hate relationship between starters and the closers. Another nuance of the game to ponder.
